Definitely paint your door a happy color.

Hardie board is just white so matching paint color is not an issue. What other color for the door? The stone has blue/gray and orangey/ brown tones. There is also a frame around the door with frosted glass. thanks

Do you know how many colors white there are? A lot. Choose a color from your stone or a nice, fun color that doesn't clash with your stone, at least, for your door. If you post a close up of your stone, a few of us can give some specific paint color ideas.

I realize that there are many shades of white but my question is whether to use white in general or another color entirely for the trim and the door. Here is a photo of the door and surrounding stone.

I do like the trim all white, personally, and I would match your siding color for that. I would replace your door as soon as you can. But in the meantime, I would paint the entire unit a color. Check out a deep navy, like Hale Navy. OR a dark charcoal gray.

I think the door may be original to the house (around 1960) and it has some detail on it. Would you just switch out the door and leave the frosted glass panels and trim as is, or replace the whole thing? what style door do you suggest? thanks

Yes, I bet it is original. I just don't care for those. I had one similar and it went. I don't think they do a thing for your façade.

I'm not sure exactly what I'd put there, but probably something with some glass in it, but still in keeping with the general style of your home.

Whether or not I kept the sidelights would depend on if I could get a unit to fit that space or if it would be less costly to just replace the door. But it's something to think about changing at some point. I think you can do better there and something with clear glass will dress it up.

Surround stays white. My comments on matching the white were also directed at the foundation. You want the same white that is on the Hardie board.
