Hi

We have an old can opener and toaster built into the wall. We tested the circuit breaker to determine that the toaster has a dedicated circuit. But the can opener no longer works.

!. What is the easiast way to determine if the can opener has a dedicated circuit.

2. is there any reason we can't replace the toaster with an outlet for a microwave so it will have a dedicated circuit.

1. Absent finding a tripped breaker, you'd not know. You probably need to remove the toaster to check to see if it is getting power or not. If not, there are ways to trace the wire.

2. It would depend on just how the toaster circuit is wired. While nothing prohibits the toaster from being installed on any circuit of sufficient ampacity, unless it is on a dedicated 20A circuit, turning it into a receptacle would be a code violation. Of course, it's possible the toaster installation already is a code violation (or perhaps just grandfathered on an earlier code).
