Top Loader advice

So it looks like my Miele isn't going to get fixed. We have a 4842. I've only been able to wash with cold water for months, and now it's not always sending out cold water when it's needed. The part is $246, according to the Miele people. It also has a leak somewhere, which isn't usually a problem, but every so often, it starts to beep and I have to unplug it and get the water out of the it so it will run again. I do at least 3-6 loads of laundry a day. We are going to have a buy a used machine. I'm expecting that we will be looking at a top loader. I've heard that the paddle agitators don't do as good of a job agitating as the others. Is this true? I wash cloth diapers and need good agitation. Are there any top loader models to stay away from? I'm hoping that we will be able to buy a new washing machine at some point, but with 2 kids in college, it's not currently in the budget. If you have read through my novel, thanks.

I would think the Miele would be well worth repairing..but what do I know LOL..if you replace it though I'd sell it on Craigs list..there's a lot of people that buy and repair Miele except the 1900 series which I read somewhere parts are no longer available for. .could be wrong..

Anyway I'd stay away from TL HE machines as they get no love.

We really can't afford to fix it right now. It's got a couple of things wrong with it as it is. I know that getting a used machine might just put us with another broken machine, but the parts won't cost as much. :( I'm sad we bought this machine when we did.

I'd look for a used older TL'er in working condition.

Avoid he toploaders, they won't get your clothes clean. An older may tag with an agitator would be my choice.

Go for an old school traditional top loader with a real pole agitator (slightly used).

I'm looking for an old fashioned top loader or some kind of front loader on Craigslist now. I can get some for $150-$200. Thanks y'all.

After much discussion, I started looking for front loaders on CL as well. The difference in price between them and what I got brand new was negligible. $100. Wow. Anyway, I ended up with a Whirlpool Duet and it is supposed to come on Thursday. I can't wait to start washing in warm/hot again. Even my 21 yo has noticed that her clothes don't smell as fresh, and she doesn't notice things like smell very often. Thank you all for posting about your washing machines. It made my search much easier. Oh! And we plan to keep the Miele so that dh can fix it in his "spare" time. We are still on the search for parts that don't cost an arm and a leg.

When my son and his wife were looking for a washer and dryer a few years ago I recommended they buy a USED Speed Queen top loader. They purchased from a used appliance store in San Antonio TX. They moved from San Antonio to Fort Worth and the units survived the self-move well.

The washer has required two minor repairs since they purchased, one of which my son was able to do himself. They now have two children and use cloth diapers. They're very happy with their SQ set and have thanked me several times for the recommendation.

dianne47 - I looked for a used Speed Queen and could not find one. I had followed along with the MamaP saga here and I saw how happy she was with the Whirlpool. When I found one for a good price, I decided to purchase it rather than keep waiting to locate a used top loader. I am hopeful it will do a good job. Just having hot water will be a huge improvement.

Suseb, which Duet did you end up buying?

    How old was your Miele?

I bought the WF95. I found it on sale at the local Sears. The miele was almost 6 years old. I am a hard user of a washing machine. I do at least 2-3 loads a day. Sometimes, I do 4. I wash all of our knits in the washer and many of our dry clean only items. I also wash cloth diapers, which means an express/quick wash followed by the longest wash I can do afterwards. I do this every other day, every third day.

That is disappointing for a Miele, however quite consistent with my post in the the thread "I need a new washer LG FL". Miele is in fact one of the best built machines, however they too have there issues. They all do, but 6 years for a luxury brand appliance at a premium price is very poor service.

Yes, rpsinfoman, it is really disappointing. But remember, I use a washer in an almost commercial like fashion. I did expect it to last at least 10 years, though. My husband thinks that it can be fixed, and he will probably do that at some point. It was using almost no water because of the water inlet issue. And I was starting to get some stink with my diapers. I realized that with the cooling down in the weather, that our tap water wasn't as warm as it had been all summer, so our clothes were getting washed in cooler and cooler water. Warm/hot water washes do clean better. :) I have done a load of diapers already in the new washer and it pours a ton of water into the machine, but I can't actually see it. The soap that I used didn't suds a lot, so I stuck my hand in there and the water felt slippery. I may add another 1/2 tablespoon - tablespoon in there. I'll see how well the washer does once the diapers come out of the dryer. They smelled good coming out of the dryer, but diapers are funny, and they can smell bad when a baby pees in them, and you know that a wash routine needs some tweaking. Rambling now. LOL I am trying to figure out what setting to wash my next load (little girl underwear, pajamas, a few lighter colored 100% cotton shirts), and also how to use the steam option. My manual doesn't say when to use it, just how.

Yes, I am so glad that the diapers can go in hot. There are some new diapers with KAM plastic snaps on them and some other with the snaps and PUL/TPU. I imagine they are fine in hot, but I'd still worry. Mine are old fashioned flats, for the most part. I do have a few that are hemp and they require more agitation to keep clean. I may try the longest allergen cycle on them next, to get some more water in there. I also think that I like the drain and spin cycle with an extra rinse better as a prewash.

My girlies are awful on clothing. They get them dirty and then some. The baby, of course, has dirty clothing, as he is trying to keep up with them. I use wool pants, so those get hand washed, or put in the washer with other cold stuff. I have a pair of wool pants now that I can't get clean due to mud. I'm going to have those soak overnight. Again. But kids get a lot of stuff dirty and they have stains. No matter how I try, I never can get every single one of them pretreated. So, I need a wash cycle that gets them clean. I've been using the heavy duty cycle. I've tried warm and hot. I'm worried I'm overfilling the machine. I don't get any extra water at all. Just very wet clothing. It's probably fine. My Miele had a puddle of water, but the clothing was not as wet. All that to say. Nothing here is fragile. LOL It goes from one girl to the next until they get through the youngest, and then out to the Goodwill. The baby is a boy, so he gets new to him clothing.

I love washing diapers and baby stuff, too. I have no idea why washing clothes is so much fun for me. I also like to fold the diapers, but the girls all fold their own clothing. I need to do a couple more loads of regular clothes tomorrow and then will start on the bedding. I've got a little bit of a backlog as I was waiting for the new machine to come so I could play.

When are companies going to get that the top loaders with agitators are what people want. They do the bast cleaning, AND I want to choose my own water level!!! I had a front loader and hated it, could not wait to get rid of it.
