Hi Devi, lovely home your building. I would highly recommend at least a roof over the front door or a covered porch, consider a shed roof that extends min. 8' from the house & maybe posts. I don't know which direction your rain falls so adjust the roof depth as needed. You and your guest will really appreciate having a nice dry entry. Best of luck on your new home. Aesthetically the design may need some type of element like the roof/porch you describe.

Functionally the roof will help protect your door from the weather and provide shelter for an outdoor living space. The roof will also effect the amount of light entering the space(s) behind the windows the roof is above.

The answer to your question may be best answered by someone that an be on site to discuss advantages and disadvantages.

Porch seems to be the consensus. I would always go porch over no porch, especially on a farmhouse style.

Something over an entrance usually seems appropriate, however, overhangs have to be tied into the basic structure and flashed correctly, and your home is already closed in so it's going to be a very big change now. This high pitched gable has an overhang over the entrance by recessing the doorway.

Also, what was the planned shape for this over hang............gable or shed roof? That is going to change the appearance of the home considerably, so it has to be accomplished CAREFULLY. I'd be concerned that anything now will appear like an after thought.

I think you like the look right now in part because there's a division of the front face by the line of insulation. If the whole front is a continuous surface, it will look very large and unadorned, and the porch is the sort of solution that would be suggested for just that dilemma.

Maybe the overhang could be suspended by cables.

I don't know about you but I enjoy sitting on the front porch with the wife enjoying the sunrise. In the evenings we're on the back porch. At lease some type of awning is needed.

If what @acm says is true, you could consider using a different material for the top and bottom half of the front face to keep the division like the insulation is giving you now, then put a nice big lantern above the door like Beverly's first picture. I'm still team porch, but if you like how it looks now, it's an option. I actually think the front face would look good without a porch. I vote porch for practicality and enjoyment :)

Width of it is fine, would go a little taller if possible.

I would go for 2 windows on the gable.

Taller - two side by side comes closest to scale . . .the sill is low for it to be great from outside as a square . . ..

I think you should go with the porch as well!

I like the two side by side windows or the one narrower tall window you mentioned earlier. The direction of your siding might influence your decision.

I like your last picture, the two smaller windows' scale is better with the other windows and porch. The two tall windows draw too much attention.

I am glad you had the porch added. Nothing better than watching the kids/grandkids playing out in front while I'm sitting on the porch!!
