I actually like the warm wood tone of the nightstands with the gray bed. But a lot depends on your flooring, walls, bedding, etc. Make sure the stands are tall enough for that bed.

I don't think they go with the bed. If you buy them, do not paint.

IMO they are too tall

They would be fine, if they did not have the top part.

I wouldn't paint the nightstands. They are pretty large, and the bed headboard is fairly tall as well. I think you would need a lower profile headboard (or none) to go with those nightstands. Something with glass and wire could look very nice

the dimensions are 20 inches wide, 16 deep, 27.5 inches tall. I know the average nightstand is in that range. would you suggest sanding and staining maybe?

I doesn’t matter what you do to them they are wrong for the bed too tall and just not right something low and wide is what you need for that bed and IMO quite heavy looking in other words solid to the floor with drawers would be nice the 1 st pic the lamps are all wrong but the tables are good

They are fine and you don't have to paint them
Here's a similar bed for way less and you could just buy different end tables if you aren't feeling those other ones

A few other ideas

we do like the mid century look of the nightstands so to Danielle's point, should I find an upholstered bed that has legs similar to the table?

A couple of tips. Nightstand or cabinet heights beside bed should be approximately the height of the mattress. This makes reaching from bed to stand easiest. Second, the bed/headboard is more modern in style so if you want modern look, keep night stands consistent. Those you showed are actually end tables for a sofa from 1960s maybe. Just don't work either height, or style. I like being creative with design, but you do that with the basics in place. So, for example, if you want painted night stands, hunt in resale shapes for nite stands that meet your rules. Take measurements so you know height you need and width your room can handle. Do that and you will find pieces that work and you can enjoy. BTW, they don't have to match. Could be a dresser and a table. As long as heights and widths work. Have fun.

Living Spaces also has a MCM inspired style that would look good with the end tables. The frame is a actually a lighter cherry that looks very close to your tables. If you use a short box spring with a regular mattress, it comes up quite high and may work with the height of the tables.
