I like #13 as it brightens the room subtly, yet is neutral and interesting It allows choices for many colors to be added for accessories. It stays in your feeling of a softer palette.

I like #14 as it is bright and has more color. Has a small punch of additonal color.

The others are all nice. Soft feeling and are great options also. Depends on the feeling you want for the room.

I still like #6 with the leaves (it reminds me of the family room in the 3rd picture below which is one of my inspiration pics).
I also really like the bold graphic pillows in the two pictues below. In that case I probably need a more subtle patterened rug, like the room below with the IKAT pillows. [houzz=]
I also like 13, for some reason I missed that one before.
Problem is I really like a lot of these options and am having trouble narrowing it down!

I by far prefer rug #1............remember, the reason you are changing rugs is because you did not like so much "busy contrast"

brody1313, that is true..and I have the sample for #1 arriving in the mail this week so I'll be able to tell how it looks in person next to the walls. but does the Craftsman style rug mean I need to find more traditional patterns for pillows? This is where I have a hard time...

#13 and #17 are from overstock and I made sure they came with 8 x 11. Very big difference in price as you will see :)

Don't go with traditional aching made rugs. I like the third one of those where you early on posted three UBS. That one seemed to have the sage green in it. The large patterns for sure do not look good.

Don't do an explicitly craftsman style rug.

amydan, I am looking for rugs and cushions. Do you mind if I ask your budget for the rug? I see some @ $200 and others @ $1500.

#13 gets my vote. You could get a chair that ties in some of the wall color in a soft pattern. One of your inspiration photos( Sue DiChiara) has a soft pattern in the rug, geometric print chairs, textured sofa and bold pillows and still looks calm. The pillows in the picture on the left would look nice depending on what you choose for a chair. Good luck - remember this is fun!

amydan, are you flexible on the size of the rug? Can it be 2 or 3 inches smaller than 8 x11?

amydan, the rug below comes in size 8'3" x 11'6" (maybe too big). I don't know if you like it but it has the same colors as the cushions you have in your inspiration pictures.
Houzzers: Do you think the cushion in the picture is too much of the same as the rug? If there are also solid aqua and green color cushions, would it still be too much pattern?

I like the combination of rug 18 with that pillow. Most of the rugs shown don't seem to go with the colour of the sofa, but then again... we can't see the colour of the sofa and also the rugs' colours can be different in real life. Lots of guesswork...

Smgolf12, my budget is under $1000. I believe I do have some flexibility with the size. I got this sample in last night from Pottery Barn and it reflects color of walls beautifully. Problem is 8x10 is discontinued. Would have to go with 5x7 or 9x12. 9x12 means much more of furniture will be on rug, not just front legs.

I do like 18 but hard to tell if colors are similar to green that's in the wall. Is it an Overstock rug too?

The couch color is pretty accurate in photo.

It's interesting that the opinions here are pretty divided between large patterns and more subtle patterns.

I really don't think I'll be able to find a patterned chair for the other corner that picks up wall color, so I'll probably wind up with a solid colored chair.

So Helga, you like rug #5 in the numbered series smgolf12 did? What is an aching made rug? Is the craftsman style too restricting?

I love that Pottery Barn rug/sample. Nice subdued colours.
Look, I have a very large rug in my room and my furniture is almost entirely on it, only the hind legs are off it. Looks good, nice and balanced and cozy.
So if the rug goes halfway under the furniture or if the furniture is entirely on it, that's no problem. The problem sometimes is that rugs are too small and aren't functioning as an anchor for the room. So then everything gets a bit here and there...

If you like to see: it's in my ideabook 'carolins' favourites', one of the last photos in there. Says 'my own livingroom' I think.

I vote for the Pottery Barn rug in the 9x12 size. I love your pillows. Looking forward to seeing the finished room.

I knew, the green was not a match but it has the same colors as the pillow. Also I had always wonder that if we mix (in our head) the aqua and the green of the rug and it becomes something close to the wall, it could work. This is not something I read anywhere, it is just a gut feel. I would be really really interested to know what Houzzers think about that theory. Any comment on that anyone? Even if people say that it could work, it is still a personal preference, so if you were not to be comfortable with the idea, then I would suggest not buy a rug based on this concept.

Also, I was looking for rug 8 x 11, does a rug 8 x 10 work also?

Amydan, Are you looking for a chaise similar in shape as the one in the Sue Di Chiara inpiration picture?

@smgolf12: I often go on gut feelings, sometimes you just feel something will work brilliantly and can't really explain why. I liked the rug with the cushion and it doesn't fight with the green on the wall. I think getting the exact green will be difficult, material is different, one is vertical in the room, the other is horizontal so the light hits it differently. And most greens go well together (see nature).

But I do like the latest one from Pottery Barn best of all the choices. Very chic.

I would select the rug you like the best. It is easier reprint to get a great match. If you can, take the paint sample as well as one of the sofa pillows and try to see the actual rug. If you can't, make sure it is returnable. I like either 1 or 2. Rug one is more soothing. Rug 2 is more exciting and would look great if some of the pillows incorporated some of the other bold colors

Thank you carolins. Somehow I thought, the rug #18 was working but I couldn't explain why. So I guess, in this particular case, it was because of nature. Plus I like the light blue-aqua with the sofa.
I don't know what is the one from pottery barn. What its number?

amydan96, now that I have the chance to look at all the rugs in large, I don't like rug #5 anymore. Not because it's too Craftsman, but the colors don't quite go.
For the same reason I also don't like rug #18. It's too loud. And of course it goes beautifully with that pillow. But it doesn't pull any of the brown in. You want more understated (you are talking to a person who loves and is not afraid of color, - see my pictures).
Going several times through all rugs you have here, I have decided that I like #8 best. It brings both colors in, the brown and the green. The brown is the closest of all rugs until now.

However - that said.... If you like the Afghan pillow, then get a nomad rug. I personally tend very much towards those, because I lived in Beirut/Lebanon for 14 years. I myself have rug pillows, and even a chair upholstered with an old rug. Much more personal and different.

BTW, amydan96, do you mind sharing with a computer-challenged person how you got those rugs on each picture under your furniture?

Sorry, amydan96, that was a typo, not "aching made rugs" but "machine made rugs". My iPad has this infuriating habit of using it's own words, and if I don't check closely what I have written, it comes out with the weirdest words.

Amydan, the last few rugs, I gave you some samples of fresh looking rugs but from your inspiration picture, I don't know if it is the fern that is attracting to you or if it is the freshness of the rug. Let me know which direction would would like me to go. In the mean time, I am looking for the exact rug that you have in your inspiration picture :)

I like the way image # 3 and 4 brighten the room, but if you have kids, pets or heavy traffic I would consider one of the rugs with the brown background #1 or 2. You have a lot of choices, narrow it to a 3 that you like the most and focus on finding pillows that will work with the 3 you love the most. Good Luck!

Amydan, one more rug with the chair. I think maybe you could add some color with cushions. Maybe you could use color for one art on the wall. I see something through the mirror. If this one is in the living room, you can use color from that art.

Thank you again Houzzers for all the great comments and suggestions. I love all the photshopped images, they have been very very helpful. (Helga, smgolf12 did those).
I got the sample of rug 1 in today and the colors also blend really well with both couch and wall, however the description on the Pottery Barn website says it "evokes a motif from the Arts and Crafts era" and I'm thinking the other more modern furnishings in the house just won't blend with it as well as some of the other rugs we have looked at. The pillows I like are more modern as well.
I still really like rug 23 (the other Pottery Barn rug) and am seriously considering it. The sample is really beautiful. Carolins, you had a good point about the larger rug size being ok, and I like the way it looks in your room. Unfortunately it's the most costly option but so great to have an actual sample before I buy, not many places offer that.
smgolf12, I do think 8X10 would work as well as 8X11 and I'm not looking for a chaise. The corner of the room is actually too small for that; I will need just an accent chair and a modest size one at that. You have shown me so many rugs I like and I need to look at the links for rugs 22 and 24; I like them as well. (do you know where they are from)? As for the style of the rug in my inspiration picture I do like the freshness and the nature design with the ferns and leaves.
Another pillow I really like is the Kravet Green and Gray (2nd picture) and I think it might go well with the Misha Diamond rug and the brown IKAT print...
