Our First Home- and our first extensive remodel

last modified: 12 years ago
Spent five months making it livable, and have continuously been working on the house for the last 6 years. Every single thing is new and re-done except most of the trim. I love old home details, so we salvaged what we could. I took 84 "before" photos before we touched the house. I can only bore you with a few :-)

Very good. You didn't cheap put on the outside details . And the American flag. Nice to show off patriotism. Love!

Hope you will take a suggestion that would really make a difference...your shutters need to look as if they would work, even if they never close. They should be the same height as the window sash, not the trim, and should be mounted on the edges of the window sash, not on the outside of the trim. Each shutter should be half as wide as the window sash...

Thank you for all of the nice comments! :) as for the neighbors, everyone around has re-done their roof/siding from insurance money. Hailstorms have given our little village a wonderful facelift! As for the dormer upstairs (good eye, btw!) it was necessary if we wanted to finish the attic as usable space. The stairs are there and you couldn't stand up! Lol

Love the bright white trim around the windows and the railing on the porch. the taupe shutters add a nice rich touch too. The new driveway and landscaping add a lot to the curb appeal as well. Great Job!!

Louise, I really appreciate the suggestion! We actually considered that, but with our extra wide trim with decorative bends in it, it just didn't look good to us. We considered omitting them altogether, but wanted that pop of color. I figured it was a more modern way to do it? I hope it doesn't look too bad

Reno's are always tough, and expensive. You are my idol's, all those years and you never faltered, well not that we know of. Great job!!! If it turned out even close to what you visualized, you should be given a huge houss medal!

You've certainly kicked up the curb appeal by about 1000%...nice! Looks like the kitchen got a major reno too and the rest of the house got a nice face lift as well.. That's a HUGE commitment...is there a contractor in the family? ;) Enjoy the fruits of your labor...you deserve it!

it was a family job for sure, but not what you might think. My parents did the outside and my in-laws helped us do the inside. we contracted out the plumbing, electrical, and ductwork, but that was it. We learned a lot, but wouldn't want to do it again. Next house, we're hiring a builder! LOL

Beautiful transformation! My old house needs the same. Is your new siding a shade of gray?
    Jessica thanked Deb B.

    It's in O-H-I-O! :)

The siding is just a tan. Neutral and hides dirt :)

Is this in Cleveland? It looks like it might be Lakewood or the West Side of Cleveland. The hailstorm story coupled with the Ohio State Rug gave it away. Everyone in our neighborhood got new roofs from the hailstorm, too. Nothing like a good storm off Lake Erie :)

I grew up in a house that looked just like this one. Ours had a bay window on the left side. It was built by a carpenter and his son in the early 1900's. I think it was copied from one of the "Sears Roebuck" kits of that time. The house was located in Tiffin, Ohio.

Congratulations on a job well done! Your house is gorgeous! Reminds me so much of our home in South Pasadena, CA. It, too, was a circa 1900 construction known as a California bungalow. We reno'd it inside and out but it took 10 years. I respect your commitment!

I have a brick rental that needed the eaves, soffits , trim and fascia painted. I had it all (except the brick) sided. As icing on the cake, I added black shutters. No, they are not the size that will close. They are ICING ON THE CAKE shutters. Like we girls, not everything is authentic or in working condition, but it looks pretty.

Well, We're back at it again... repainting/decorating, built a shed and fire pit, as well as finished off the garage and will be installing a patio in the back yard. Home ownership is fun, but $$$$.... It's our sanctuary!

(^^^This used to be the red bedroom)

    And repainted the bathroom...

I hadn't decorated them yet when I took this photo, but we built these shelves above our sliding door and our bay window in the dining room. The bay window shelf does not have the curtain rod... hoping to add crown molding soon!

What a classy work you have done on the house, I truly love the colors and the clean lines, I am enjoying the before and after photos..that are thankfully taken from the same angle, for easy comparison. that is not always the case on Houzz

Wow! What a total transformation! It looks very gorgeous. Just moved in my first home after closing on it a month and a half ago. We had to do some of the same type of reno to my old 1959 gramma house just to make it livable! Lol Can totally relate to needing a nap!
