What's wrong with the one you have?

It's older and I feel that the room lacks character. Hoping a new rug would add a little style/flare the room needs.

Way too bright for your space. How about a rug that is mostly the background color of your cow picture? Pale blue?

Have you considered moving the "Cow" art to the wall where the mirror currently is? That larger wall might do it more justice ...and add more interest to the dining room?

I wouldn't add wainscoting. It looks like you have some beautiful woodwork in your doorways, and I'd probably leave it at that. Of your choices, I think I like the Lewis Hand Hooked rug the best. I also really like the 2nd rug that Beverly showed. Your room is pretty already so I think you can work on it with some minor changes!

Would you be willing to try it with no rug and post more pics? I know that may require a willing accomplice!

Lower the chandelier, get a larger rug, pick up rug colours for slim chair pads, and change the direction of the mirror. Most of the wood (furniture and structural) is oppressively dark. This means that the filmy drapes don't work. Wider lined drapes would create a better balance.

My curtains are currently sheer linen... I was considering cream linen or the Luciana medallion drapes. We're going to paint the columns and beam white to match our crown moulding and trim.

loudon - where is your dining room in relation to the living room you have a post on? Are the 2 rooms visible to one another?

My dining is open to my kitchen. The living room is the next room. I'll take pics.

Yes, I purchased my dining room rug 9yrs ago. Loved it at the time, but I feel like the I need something a little more vibrant in my overly neutral room.

Tgb1 I did think about that, but I feel like the room is too traditional. I was hoping to give it more of a modern feel with more modern colors. I do realize the Lewis hook rug has similar colors, but the colors are brighter and it also has blues and greys sprinkled throughout.

Beverly suggested a brighter rug awhile back, and your living room rug would certainly fit the bill...

Yes - but it's a lovely rug and I think it may be worth a try. This way you would have more color to work with in the dining room, and it would lighten things up in the living room. You could add complementary pillows on the sectional with the more neutral rug. Just my 2 cents, don't mean to offend. You already have some lovely stuff to work with. I do agree with some others to lose the word art....

I get a more casual farmhouse feel with your space..I would add a geometric vibrant hooked rug..this is beautiful and would bring color and personality to your room!

I bought that same Cow canvas art for my son and daughter in laws home we call her Betsy:))

we added some of the yellow and blues from the art into the kitchen and dining area.

Home interiors with ease thank you for mentioning getting a casual farmhouse feel from my space and not a Mediterranean one! We've worked hard to lighten the space up. Still planning on painting the beam and columns white, so the room isn't overloaded with dark heavy wood! Replacing the mirror with colorful artwork and adding a buffet.

Your plan sounds perfect!! White beams will look so pretty and also add to the more farmhouse feel..if you ar adding wainscoting I would not add the traditional style...I would suggest beadboard with a chair rail or a flat box design..like this...

We'd love to, but my husband is hesitant for two reasons: 1. He thinks it look strange to just cover the 2walls that make up the dining room in an open floor plan, and 2. If we cover both kitchen and dining In the open plan, there are too many short spaces that would interrupt the flow of the pattern. What do u think?

This is an example of the short spaces.

For your situation and the small areas you need to add the breadboard with chair rail is perfect solution...just like this...straight up beadboard no boxes...easy to install in small areas..with all the painted beams throughout the open floor plan space it will be a knockout!

Update: so over the past couple of years, we have finally painted the columns and changed out the chandelier to lighten things up. I still feel like I need a change and have decided a new rug will help make this room feel complete. I still keep coming back to Ballard’s Lewis hooked rug. I’m also planning to place a house plant to the left of the front door to add some contrasting color and life to the room. Thank you for your help!!
