Maybe wait till you get some colour into the room first and then it will help guide you for curtains etc. For instance if you go for quieter art, some bolder fabric or more textured fabric might be apt, and if your art is more colourful, something subtle might work better. Give it time on the forums as well as there are lots more talented people that will add their thoughts!

Yes, please do something with the windows. I would suggest simple panels, the same in the living room and dining room. I'd like to see the three windows treated as one big one-hang panels outside the first & third that will pull all the way across. I can't tell the color/s of your sectional or your ottoman from the picture. Gray? Green? (love the Pissaro print above!)

Yes to improved lighting. How about a chandelier above the dining table? And floor or table lamps in the living room?

Difficult to tell from the picture what kind of lighting you need, however, the overhead light in the fan needs to go. Is this a rental or did you buy? Yes, a chandelier over your table would be nice. Maybe a floor lamp next to the sofa where the plant /tree (?) is? Take your time, you'll find things you like to ad, don't try to fill it with random stuff just because it looks unfinished.

Lol no it's a rental. I hate that ceiling fan. I also don't like the color of the crown molding. I can't really alter much with the light fixtures I struggle with accessories .My personal style is very boring (I only wear black or white)lol.I want to make this place a little fun however I have to bulid around what I have.

I agree with some of these comments. You are lacking in some color on your walls, and the only other thing is lighting. Always light a space as if there are no overhead lights, even if there are. This may seem counter-intuitive, but brightening up dark corners, like the one behind your sofa, and removing the harshness of the spot directly over the table will add warmth to the space. Great job with the furniture. If you pick either lighting or art, choose lighting.

Melinda, I kept my initial comment very brief because there simply was't enough information about you or the apartment and to get it right we need to know more. It would appear it is the edge of the kitchen bench just on the bottom left of your photo ? If this is correct the kitchen colors will have big effect on the rest of the room. How do the other rooms flow from this photo and what are there colors??

Make no mistake about black and white as it has been the classic foundation for both clothing and interior design for ever (That's why you like wearing it)

Depends on the look you want (contemporary, traditional, modern etc) coupled with your budget will determine your direction.

I have a couple of ideas which would transform this room but it will entirely depend on your taste. Also could you take a photo from the opposite corner so i can see if that is indeed a kitchen on the left and what style it is.

Wow the last decorator certainly liked beige ! This coupled with the brown kitchen and black appliances takes me takes me back to Gloomy. If it was mine I would give the entire space including the kitchen a complete makeover. I would start by painting all the ceilings white and then use a soft french grey on the walls. To soften the look I would replace the blinds with curtains and use full length tracks and full length curtains mounted just under the crown molding to lift the ceiling height and create a more spacious feeling) It doesn't appear there any spare wall for art apart from the wall your TV is mounted on so you will need to inject color with the curtains, cushions etc. The desk, TV area looks quite messy with cabling etc and the tv is mounted way to high on the wall, a built out media wall could be the answer here or at the least wrap the cabling. Your grey sectional may look ok in a new room color scheme but I would be changing the dinning table and chairs, Personally I don't like glass table tops and have always found them to be harsh and load plus its impossible to play footsies without an audience. Black and beige just don't go together so I would replace the black chairs with white ones with wooden legs , I would also try and get a white topped table with light wood legs. This will tie them into the beige carpet and kitchen flooring. If you cannot get wood I would opt for either chrome or stainless steel legs. In the kitchen either paint or change all the brown joinery and replace the counter tops.

The only lighting I would keep would be the track light in the kitchen. I would add two pendent lamps above the sink and bench and two modern led chandeliers one above the table and the other where the fan is. I would also use a modern stand alone floor lamp to brighten up and dark areas.

You still haven't told us what style you like but i did notice you would like to "build around what you have" so i am guessing a major remodel is really out of the question. Its really hard to make suggestions without knowing what you like but currently the Scandinavian look is making a bit of a comeback and if its that look your after you would really need to replace all your furniture but hopefully the above will give you some ideas.

If you do nothing else start with what you hate, ie change that crown molding color to just one or two shades darker than the ceiling. Then go to the lighting ( I have a chandelier in mind that I believe will transform the look of your room) I will try and find an image to post. After that hit curtains or table and chairs. The curtains will be super expensive as there are so many windows. There maybe an option to disassemble the blinds and get the "blades" resprayed or replaced with some color.

Going back to your original question. Yes, area rug, curtains/drapes, pillows, vases, etc. What color (besides black and white) do you like? Maybe a favorite lipstick, flower, culture that you can represent? Something with a bit of punch. Even a big bouquet of mixed colors will bring life or some violets on the table -- and flowers always make people smile!

Yes @christina405 I love reds, violets, teals I live all colors actually.. I did some changes I removed my computer and I hid the cords from the TV.. I was thinking maybe painting my console table.. however friends have told me to leave it because the dark brown matches my table and I was thinking maybe Dark gray/Charcoal panel curtains and then changing the pillows on my couch to give it more color

I think blue would be a good bridge between the beige and grey tones that you are trying to work with. (hence the Pisarro print) As it is a rental we have to work with what you have!

What is the view/privacy issues behind the blinds? I think curtains will just make the room look smaller and limit art placement.

The best thing to do with bad overhead light is ignore them and use lamps.

The TV wall needs a clean up with a console as a good option for that. I think the TV would look better sitting on the console than on the wall.

@mramsey I love those choices and that is a huge help.. thank you I love them all.. So no to the curtain idea? I have lots of windows and my Ceilings are high I thought that would make the room look smaller as well.

You can always add curtains at some point. I think the idea is to go slow and pause between the additions to see what the effect is (plus you may save some $$ this way!)

Can you paint it? Do you want to? I think you'd feel better right away if you had some drapes at the windows to add softness. Matching them to wall color will visually enlarge the space.

It is not necessary to paint your console. You can bring in color with pillows, curtains and artwork.

I agree with decoenthusiaste, about the curtains, it will give your space an instant lift.

@decoenthusiaste I can paint it.. it looks small in the photos but the ceilings are 10ft and I have 1200 square feet it's a lot to do. I was thinking maybe just the crown molding and doors. The management company loves this beige all my doors are this colour

Match linen drapes to the wall color and paint your crown and doors.
