You show so little of your house. I can't tell if you take value away from your home by painting the trim based on one picture of door molding.

I agree with the poster. It all depends on the type of home you have. Is this a historic home, a craftsman?

That looks like nice wood, not cheap Colonial trim. Show us the house from a wider shot. I would not paint that just seeing the close up.

Unfortunately I don't have much of a wide picture at this time. It's a small house built in the 50's, about a 90k home.

Paint the walls. Not the woodwork.

There is nothing special about this trim so paint it in fact in this type of home i often paint the walls and the trim the same color just a different sheen

Not a fan of painted woodwork if it was originally stained. In my opinion 1950s stained woodwork looks like cheap would work when painted. If you really want white woodwork, and it works with your budget, I would suggest replacing original woodwork with a more current/ contemporary trim profile.

^That! MCM minimalism looks good in wood. It just looks cheap when painted. The house has a strong MCM vibe that I would not ruin with paint.

If you are updating to sell, then yes I would paint the trim white. The honey colored wood stain dates your home. Newly crisp white walls and trim will highlight your beautiful wood floors. I would also paint or replace doors to white and update all gold hardware.

Seems like 50/50 thus far. The hardwood floors actually look better in these pictures than their actual condition (need resanded). So I was thinking paint could help bring more visualization away from the floor.

Just to offer an outside perspective. As a buyer if I see original hardwood floors, regardless of their condition, it is a huge plus....for me.

I think yo have to re-paint the doors into white also I recommend you to paint the wall by ( sense, sand or oxford river) from jotun

I agree, hardwood floors are a plus, even if they need maintenance. Someone who knows what they're doing could redo all the hardwood in my house for a few hundred bucks. Not a big investment for the right person. I think I'm leaning toward painting the trim. I looked at it closer last night and there are quite a few imperfections (holes, chips, scuffs, etc). If I had a grand I'd just replace it all.

After seeing many ugly results from painting that type of wood, I'll probably just end up buying 4 white hollow core doors and put oil rubbed door knobs on them.

Why you're so disappointed

If you plan on staying there for a while, ask yourself what finish you like best. If you plan on selling, ask a local realtor what finish buyers like best.

If you want to modernize your look, then yes, paint the trim and doors. And update the hardware as well. None of that trim is doing you any favours - it is just there, not setting a tone or making a design statement. For some, painting natural wood is a definite no-no but IMO, painted trim (doesn't have to be white) adds so much more to a room than plain old fashioned wood trim. If you have the budget, you could consider new doors and trim with a more modern profile on the trim. Keep the hardwood floors - they look lovely. If you are painting the trim and doors white or something close, you'll probably have to rethink your wall colour. Think of this as an opportunity to start a fresh canvas.

One more thing and this is such an easy fix to bring things forward from earlier eras, replace the light switches with a more modern Decora type switch. Plenty of colours to choose from for those and you'll be amazed how a new white switch looks so much better than a dingy formerly white switch. Brightens and freshens things up for a very cheap fix.
