Some suggestions. I would go with a sofa & 2 chairs. You could put 1 chair where the plant is & the other directly across from the fireplace. I would add a thicker, chunkier mantle to the fireplace, but I would not put stone all the way up to the ceiling(it might be to over powering in the room). I would add a larger size rug(maybe 8x10), take the floor lamp and move it to the other side of the room(where the plant is & if you decide to put a chair there it could go behind the chair) & put a table lamp on the other side of the couch on the end table. You could check out adjustable sliding panel cordless shades for the sliding doors(they have them on Amazon). If you could move the bookcases to another room you could put a console table there and tuck a couple of small ottomans under the table for extra seating and hang a mirror above the console table & hang a larger piece of art above the sofa. Good luck on your project-- here's a few suggestions: If it were my house, I'd definitely consider moving the TV above the fireplace & putting a sofa or sectional with its back to the kitchen. This will help to make the fireplace the focal point, and create a warm intimate room. The attached picture is a suggested layout (style to your own liking). I wouldn't put stone above the fireplace (too small of a space) but maybe invest in some custom carpentry. Also - the fireplace wall would make a great accent wall!

Here are some options for rugs depending on which direction you'd like to take your room. Some shade of blue is appropriate complement color to the wood floor.

It is a bit heavy with all of the dark furniture and sofa. A lighter color sofa with some different pieces such as side table and or coffee table in a metal (gold, polished nickel, marble, copper); mirrored, or lucite accent pieces would help balance your space as well as compliment your gorgeous floors. I would decide what direction I was going with furniture options before anything else. Although here is an idea to add interest to your fireplace:). Good luck with everything! Do not put the T.V above the fireplace I would just do 2 matching sofas perpendicular to eachother a larger area rug take the clock away and choose light colors for the sofas and less bulky ones

"Where should I start?"

You should start by looking at LOTS of pictures and decide what style you like and want. Once you have an idea of what you'd like to have as the end product, then you can start asking about details like paint color, furniture arrangement, and pieces to buy. Right now, you're asking us, "What kind of clothes should I wear?" but we don't know the occasion, your age, or your gender.

Start off by having fun and dreaming about what you want your family room to look like. Once you have a general idea, and a couple of photos to share, then we can provide better advice.

Also...I would add crown molding as well as molding around the windows.

There are several things you should not repeat....no rug and coffee table floating in the middle of the room with no purpose or use.

Your furniture seems to be in a good place. Keep TV across from sofa.

I think you're too focused on the fireplace. That isn't the main area that could use attention.

Why is the rug off center with the fireplace? /coffee table should be in reach of sofa if you're seated....about 18 inches at most.

Agree with better drapes.. Go floor to ceiling on all windows. Keep the color lighter on the curtains.

Lower the art over the sofa.

You could use at least one or two chairs.

When I look at your room I don't think "Gee this room needs crown molding". That's a very subtle detail that might look fine but isn't the main reason the room doesn't look exactly right.

Visiting a few good furniture store will also help - armed with pictures of your space and measurements and some inspiration room pictures. Just finding a good comfy sofa that will fit in the room can be difficult. Most stores have design help as well-many will come to your home for free. It appears you have room for a comfy chair as well. One piece of leather and one fabric..your choice but not to bulky for your smaller space. Post a few inspiration pictures and Houzz will help as well.

Leelee, the crown molding was just a suggestion! Although it definitely would not hurt the looks of the space. I would first choose the furniture, rug and then window treatments. Gee...I suppose I am focused too much on small details!
