The yellow cotton tree (Cochlospermum regium) originates from the dry tropical savanna region of Brazil, can survive in climate zone 10, and is fairly drought tolerant.

The more common ornamental cultivar has beautiful double-flowering yellow blossoms and does not produce any messy seeds. It has been a common ornamental tree in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia, where it is commonly planted in parks and along the streets.

The species does have a relative native to India, C. religiosum, but that species only has simple petals, like the original C. regium that grew in the wild, the flowers are not as attractive.
