not much design help but I too work from home. First thing I did was place my desk to the side of the window (my chair faces the window) so I can look outside. I'm on the first floor so I stuck up 5 bird feeders and a bird bath to give me something to look at all day. I'd go bonkers if I only had a wall to look at all day.

Ohh and I painted my walls spinach white by sherwin williams. It's a perfect backdrop for greys/whites/silver.

Oh, my how dreary. You could try putting desk sideways to window, but the glare would bother me when working on laptop? What if you turned the desk with its back to the window? In other words, float the desk in the room. Then I would wrap some fabric that is fun around the edge of the outer side of the desk. Bring in some color that way. An inexpensive fabric trick is to look for "cloth shower curtains"! They have wide widths and can be very helpful to doing a little project like this. Pick colors that make you feel great! Get some art work that picks up the color. (looks like aqua might be a favorite!) Then on your desk itself, find a better lamp that is decorative as well as functional. I would put some money in that so it gives a professional impression. I would also better organize things on the desk top itself. If you move the desk and float it, then you could get some "cubes" to put where the desk was and put some of the items you don't use frequently off the desk surface. It is a very small desk surface, so you probably need more "work surface" as well. You could also get a "rolling" laptop table that you could put on one end of the desk (kind of at the open end you would not be using to enter and sit down) and that would help relieve your lack of desk surface as well. These are available at Office Depot for under $50 especially on sales. Hope these tips help.

You should be able to get a low hutch that would get some of the stuff off your desk. It could also include book shelves, but maybe your junk collectors could start earning their keep in that regard. Then, you know, a small bulletin board and a couple of pictures that you really like to see!

I have a similar sized desk and "work area" by a window. I put the desk so my back is to the window and I face out into the room. That frees up the wall space for whatever kind of bulletin board, art, high shelves, etc. and did not take up any different of a "footprint" in the room. IKEA is the mecca for looking at compact office/desk ideas with lots of useful and small scale options to cheer up the space.
