How do I reach a high light fixture?

I have to buy a light fixture for a stairwell. How does one reach a light fixture from 16 feet? A ladder won't fit on the bottom landing....is there such a thing as a pull-down fixture? I am returning the fixture we just put up because I think it is too large....and I can't stand that the bulbs show from the front door as you enter the house. If I buy glass, how will I clean it? Even if I don't buy glass, how will I change the bulbs?

Thanks, Jeanne. What I wound up doing was replacing that fixture with one that has a light diffuser on the bottom. That solved the glare problem. As for cleaning....I'm going to hope that fabric doesn't get dirty! (???) I CAN reach this fixture by pulling it toward me while standing on a chair. I had to do this to put in the light bulbs. It isn't very safe, though, so I'm going to ask a man with long arms to help next time!!

Good question. I'm curious to hear from the experts. How about a pendant light, like these, so you can use a hook to bring the fixture to you on the side and clean it ? :)

One plan, what a great help! Light in Art, no help at all! You were too busy selling and not addressing the problem. Reaching the fixture to replace it or to replace the bulbs. Kit, it would seem that you will have to rig up some scaffolding, what a pain in the back! Do you have any painters in your circle? Maybe kill two birds as the saying goes!

Kit, the new light looks wonderful! And it lights the whole area beautifully, good choice!
