Perennials such as fruit trees/bushes and hardy herbs could be planted now. Obviously, I'm not in Carolina but these things can be planted all winter in a temperate climate and certainly by the time the daffodils bloom.

Good to know about the tomatoes! I have a camellia, Daphne, and 4 roses that I feel comfortable planting, but I think I will wait on everything else for a few more weeks. Thank you for your feedback!

We are ahead of schedule as far as spring blooming goes but not that far ahead. Daphne, Edgewarthia and some daffodils bloom around Valentines Day for me every year no matter how cold it is. I've started seeds indoors for summer crops like tomatoes and peppers but I plan on keeping them protected until spring has reliably sprung. Stuff that can handle cooler weather will get set out and back up seeds planted in case we get a hard freeze before this is all over. I remember a hard freeze in the first week of May one year - so cover your bets and be prepared to replant.

I had kale outside all winter too. My Swiss chard is outside now. Also Tom Thumb peas, they are pretty cold hardy. All mine are in pots in case a freak storm comes I can move them in.

I will have to look up Tom Thumb peas. I have never heard of them.

They are cute very small pea plants, more of an novelty/ornamental use to us than grown for food. Needs no staking. We put several in one pot and look on them as flower pots with a treat to eat. Here are some that sprouted a couple weeks ago.
