Need a new washer...

Have Maytag now, it's only 5 years old, front load - and the bearing is bad - cost was going to be outrageous to fix - seems to make sense to just buy a new one. however - what to buy??? I like a big enough capacity - kids, etc here. Dont need super fancy but would definitely like it to last more than 5 years. Whirlpool? LG? Electrolux? I am not up for another maytag I dont think, though I know whirlpool makes them. I have had Kenmore and wasn't thrilled with them, either. ugh! and who really wants to buy a washer??

oh and any thoughts on Costco washing machines - I haven't price checked to see if a good deal or good brands?

I'd tell anyone to get the one of Miele washers. Where do you live, because I believe Costco in Canada sells them at a good price. In The US they are sold at upper end appliance stores. As far as the others you mention, LG, Whirlpool, & Electrolux, they are all well thought of on this forum. Defenatily get a machine with an internal heater. There are many threads about these machines and if the temps get hot enough to sanitize. It can be a tricky procedure to find out what the actual temp is achieved because company's evidently want the customer kept in the dark.

Love my electrolux 517 w/d. Easy to use, cleans great, quiet.

But don't the Miele's have a smaller capacity than other brands?

Is the bearing truly bad? If this was diagnosed by a repair tech you might want to consult a tech from another company. This happened to me. The second tech figured the washer just needed a new drive belt. The washer worked for another three years until it was replaced.

I would consider getting a washer from a brand well represented by repair companies that are authorized to do warranty repair work. In my area LG and Samsung seem to be best covered. Sales reps indicate the LGs have fewer issues. Contact reps from a few of the brands you are considering to see who they would recommend in your area. Shortlist those brands that actually respond and give concise answers. FWIW, I purchased an LG washer/dryer set (3570) about 8 months ago. It has been quite good so far.

As for Costco, in Canada only Samsung and Miele seem to be sold. Miele has by far the better reputation. Just be sure you have electrical outlets for the models you choose. Miele washers often need a 240V outlet. Most houses in North America have only a 120V outlet for the washer and a 240V outlet for the dryer.

Good luck with making a decision.
