I agree that curtain panels and artwork above fireplace would definitely add visual interest.

Small detail suggestion - move area rug over to the right a few inches to line up with column, and then move sectional onto rug away from wall.

A large square wrought iron coffee table would compliment the railing.

Center the rug on the fireplace, then place the sectional. It will likely be further away from your wall. Try to center the coffee table on the fireplace.

Here's a suggestion of how the room could look. Mount the current image over the armoire to heighten the appearance. Maybe consider a mirror or art that is taller then the lower windows in height. Change the fan to a chandelier. Add drapery panels and rods in simulated wood.

Dramatic draperies, art or sculpture over the mantel and a stunning chandelier will do it.

Thanks for the great ideas and the visuals. I hadn't even thought about replacing the fans with something of greater visual impact. All of the furniture and materials in the room will be replaced so I'll keep your placement suggestions in mind as well.

I would have a professional do drapes that flank from the upper window flowing down on the sides for all windows. Also add a metal scroll art piece over your open entry way on the left side to coordinate with the metal railings. Larger art work perhaps a tapestry behind sectional. You have nice furnishings and I like the colors you are using. A round coffee table or ottoman would work better. Yes a beautiful chandelier would definitely make this space come alive! Best wishes!

So, the furniture is not actually mine - this is a house we are purchasing and I'm trying to make decisions about what needs to be updated before we move in. So all existing furniture will be gone. We are adding hardwood to a couple of attached rooms so will have an opportunity to stain the floors. They will be a darker brown - less gold/yellow anyway.

Sadly I don't care for the scroll work so I don't want to draw more attention to it. My style is more modern/rustic (is this a thing?) which is definitely not the house so I'm hoping to work in my style where I can without making it look like it's been shoe-horned into the wrong house.
