Is there a rule for hanging artwork?

I need to address the high hugh empty space in my formal living room. This is the first room seen on entry to my home & separates the formal living room from the formal dining. I would like to move the artwork from the dining room to this space and replace with a large rectangular mirror for more light. Any comments will be appreciated. Better still, I look forward to pictures/ illustrations. Thanks

Free hanging is usually placed with the center of the piece 60" off the floor. Above furniture 5-8" above it. If you're covering the space above a door place it closer to the door than to the ceiling.

HI -- You don't need to hang anything there . Keep all art below the top of doorways. Not every wall needs something on it. Yes ,5 feet from floor to center of art and about 6 inches above sofa back to bottom of frame. I am not a fan of the art shown , sorry . It's too manufactured and not really real art . Just saying !

Art should be hung at about eye level of the average height person. Too many hang their artwork and favorite photos too low or too high, then they wonder why visitors don't bother to look at them...

Agree with advice from decorenthusiast. I would personally consider hanging 3-D mirrors instead of art. Something like this.

The center of your artwork (vertically) should be at the eye level of an average height person (5'8"). If it's hung above a seating area, 6-8" above the top but depends on the size of the art.

I like the idea of a 3 dimensional piece. So what about this?

Abi, art is there to enjoy, so as others suggested it should be where people can see it. It applies to any art including 3D art. It may not help asking who likes it and who does not, art is very personal, so if you enjoy it that is all that matters :)... Raisa

I wouldn't put anything above this doorway. I would concentrate on the walls for art. Agree with 'decoenthusiaste'

I agree with decoenthusiaste. However, I would paint a solid band of darker colour just to reduce the height visually. (a burgundy, chocolate brown or deeper beige)

I would not hang art there either.

I think a row of decorative mirrors would be pretty and add interest, if you feel like you need to add something to that space.
