Adding my 2 cents to everyone else's. LOVE LOVE LOVE the beautiful, sleek, comfy-looking new sofa and its gorgeous colour. Love the carpet, the walls, the decor. Don't love: the old sofa (forgive my bluntness, but it's an eye-sore) and the armchairs (specifically, the brown- it's very dark).

The picture arrangement is nice. The conflict is with the floor lamp and that round barrel table. Too much stuff there. Remove one or the other to another location. If you leave the floor lamp, get a black shade for it with a gold foil liner. The twigs can stay if you leave the floor lamp. If you remove the floor lamp, then the twigs need to find another home.

I don't think the sofa is wrong, it simply needs different tables and chairs to pull it all together. A sofa that length needs an either oval or rectangular cocktail table, not a round. And the loveseat in the windows isn't working with it either, as it appears very casual and the sofa has more elegance and is going a bit more Midcentury Modern. It is one of my favorite colors and does look comfortable. Whenever you add just one piece to a room it is going to be a big adjustment and may create that design domino effect which necessitates other changes. I know you can make this work, it just feels like a stretch and is going to push your room to a new and higher level!

Just move the old sofa out of the room when hubby is away, if you haven't already. Don't say anything about it and see if he even notices.

Agree with the need for a rectangular coffee table or two cubes rather than round. If you really want to keep the older sofa consider cutting a couple of inches off the legs; paint the frame black and have box cushions made. However the new cushions would probably cost as much a nice recliner

You could replace the back cushions on the light sofa with more tailored, firmer cushions....then it won't look like the casual sister in Bermuda shorts with her sleek sister in the blue dress. You may be able to remake the existing cushions and put in firmer inserts. Then add patterned accent pillows with the blue in the design.

Keep the new couch. Get rid of the other couch. Move your chairs over to where the other couch is now. Bring in just a few things to connect your color scheme. De-clutter and then see how much better everything looks!

Try putting the new sofa in front of windows. Get rid of old sofa and replace with chairs. Make sure they are comfy if your sofa isn't. Buy some batting or stuffing and restuff the cushions on the old sofa. Buy new coordinating pillows or throws. Just a few ideas.

Cover your old sofa cushions in animal print fabric, interesting

Maybe a coffee table that is not so high would help.

Love the new artwork by the new sofa. Looks much better. Remove the cream squishy pillow from the new sofa. Here are two quick design boards with two styles. I would def re-upholster the old sofa cushions. They look too shabby for the tailored new sofa. I would also change your roman shades to something more clean line (without the frills) and modern. I personally like the darker beige on the first design board better than the white as you have a lot of darker shades throughout the room. You have a beautiful rich accent color wall and sofa and tons of color in the rug so I would go all out and embrace the warm jewel tones (teal and red) that you have.

Have had a chance to improve things in this room. I'm very happy with the way it's turning out. "Old couch haters" beware, it's still there. Plan on switching it with couch in fam room, so hang in there....

Nice changes. The large pot on top of the shelving probably needs to be moved. Either center it or move it. It competes with the mirror and that is the focal point. I would move it off the top. Mirror looks soooo much better vertically and it visually "lifts" the ceiling doesn't it? white on the old sofa helps it a lot. So good progress. Congrats. How does it feel to you? And hubby?

Thanks Flo! I am really enjoying it! It has been a dramatic change for me. And yes the vertical mirror placement was a great tip--so simple too...although living near S.F., I worry a bit about earthquakes and how it will fair amidst even a slight shake, as it is only propped against the wall with no anchoring....

My D.H. has warmed to the new couch. He's been away for the weekend and hasn't seen my latest installment of a gallery wall opposite old couch. I'd love to share it but am afraid there will be suggestions to move pics and i really don't want to as all the holes are there now in the wall....

haha, yea, we would jump all over a gallery wall for sure. lol - There are little "strips" of woven material that attach to the back of furniture and then you attach to the wall to prevent kids from pulling furniture over. I wonder if a trick like that might work for your mirror at least to keep it from falling to the floor. I think Ikea has these because they had problems with their furniture (which is rather light) can be pulled over by kids and can injure them. You have done an amazing job, so keep what you love! For sure with earthquakes, move that great pot off the top shelf of the unit next to the fireplace! lol thanks for your posts. Really enjoying your space.

Your room looks great and has so much character. Please hang the fireplace mirror though. It is not a matter of "if" but "when" for an earthquake, and the last thing you need is shards of glass all over the room.

I think your changes are terrific. Great suggestions by many and especially Flo. It's looking darn great! I really (really) like your gallery wall right of the new sofa. The arrangement and art is very pleasing to the eye. Ditto Flo's suggestion on the shelving. Then, one more thing and you can slap your hands together and say "all done". Add this pillow anywhere you like....I love the texture and it will just look "cool" in your space. (smile).

I have a gallery wall on opposite wall, but that's about it. I have kept the "frumpy" couch, because it doesn't work in the other room and we don't want to part with it...

I LOVE EVERYTHING you have done to the room, but the wrought curlique over the door way seems too insignifcant to be in the room.....I think it needs to go and the pot is still on the etegere....staying or going?

You have received so much help on this post! As you now know, you can not add 1 modern piece to a traditional room and have it work. Good luck either returning or selling the sofa and staying with a traditional room or changing the window coverings and other seating pieces in the room as well as your lighting.

Can I suggest a few things?

If it were me, I would move the lamp that's on the blue sideboard onto the glass round table beside the brown chair. Move the floor lamp over to the corner of the gallery wall. Remove one of the wooden chairs beside the sideboard. Possibly add a tall houseplant? The very top picture on the wall seems a bit too high... my eyes are being drawn up there instead of the rest of the gallery wall. On the bookshelf... I agree with moving the picture that's on the very top shelf to the middle shelf and leaving nothing on the top shelf.

Those are my free suggestions :)

For the couch that you are keeping... I can't help but think a cushion in this style would make it look less traditional, and more for what you're going for here. If you could find fabric in something that would match your rug and new couch and old chairs... that would tie it all together! Something with navy and red and dark brown or black. I think it would really change the look of the room! They can be pricey but if you sew at all it would be an easy project. I've bought very inexpensive thick foam at our neighborhood Ollie's and it turned out well.

You could do that cushion to sit on and cover the back pillows with fabric to match...

And I mean a long continuous cushion like that, just couldn't find a picture of one.

If you decided to go that route, Etsy has lots of people that do custom cushions.

Moving things around and the new coffee table really helped! I would replace the curtains next....

annsch - thanks for taking the "risk" of getting more unsolicited feedback and showing us how far along you have come. I think you have done really nice work and I hope it "feels" as good to you as you hoped and still have most of the things you love best. That is what it is all about. Keep that "eclectic" spirit no matter what! Enjoy!
