Curb appeal for 1950's Ranch Home

I am in desperate need of some serious lipstick on this bad boy. We are gravitating towards a white home with gray veneer stone to replace existing brick. We need a new gate, but what design-rod iron or wood? (we need a quality gate with mule system). Do we add more siding to other parts of the home or eliminate it? Do we add white siding to replace existing brick around front door to make that front door pop out? We need to re-create the pathway-suggestions? We will be replacing driveway with concrete. How do we re-frame existing windows. HELP!

First of all, what a great house! I love these long, low ranch houses. They look like they could outlast anything!

If all you did was just clean up the front yard, remove the shutters, paint the house white, and do a more friendly walk, you'd have something like this:

As for wood or wrought iron, if you're going to live here a long time and love the look of iron, go for that. Otherwise, save yourself the cost and do wood.

It's easier to decide on landscaping when you have a clean slate, so I'd probably recommend something like this, and then decide what you want from there.

Love the house and design presented to you. The concrete driveway really makes a difference as does the clean line of the house and yard. Please do not remove the brick it is such a nice detail.

The door would pop more if the path went straight to it. Flank the path with some plantings. If you have acidic soil, plant long-flowering hydrangeas.

Plant a prairie in the dirt.

Hi Diane, thank you for your comments. We were torn on the brick but we felt as if it dated the home and our goal was to give the rancher a modernized feel by providing it with modern materials including a new front door, lighting, and possibly new white siding-vertical.

(This is tough!) Lol!

Have you thought about painting the brick? Brick is a feature of ranch homes like these. You can certainly remove it, but it is part of the original character.

My advice: keep the brick; it is part of the architecture of the house and the time period in which it was built; straighten your doorway path (maybe add a path from the driveway to the front door); please do not use gray anywhere on the house...gray is too trend-y for such a classic ranch; remove the shutters; add lighting to the front door area; paint the door your favorite color and lastly but most importantly plant trees in your front yard and landscape under the brick or all along the front of the house. Your local garden center can advise on what to plant. And happy new house!
