I would hesitate to paint this lovely piece. There is a large selection of table coverings; from casual to funky to formal. Table linens can totally change the vibe of a room, while providing color and interest. Please see images below.

If you can bring a sample of the wall paint with you when you shop for an area rug it will be easier to coordinate which rug to buy. Home Goods has great selections. As long as the area rug has a shade of your wall color in it, it will work in the room. An indoor outdoor rug might work well for you.

Yes, a rug will help lighten up the room. Do the chairs have an upholstered seat? if you can lighten up the fabric and recover the seat ( get a pattern that will help hide stains) that would further add some brightness to the room.

No, the chairs don't have an upholstered seat. I think a rug is a good idea and sounds like less work lol

I agree!! You would need marine paint or almost a commercial grade to withstand the traffic of everyday usage. I just stripped and sanded mine after a year of having the paint scratch and mark on my painted table. You could paint the chairs and replace the chair pads. Be sure to sand them first. Spray paint works well on chairs! An indoor/ outdoor rug is also practicable. Take it outside and hose down when it stains .

Your furniture is beautiful as it is!! What you need is to add sme color to break the brown. A colorful rug, cream table runner, tall candles, colored tableware and reupholstered side chairs (next to the wall) in two different fabrics: solid on the front and pattern on the back. I created the following board for you to know what I'm talking about...

Ok, thinking.. what coordinating rug would you put with this? My dining room opens to my living room which needs a rug too :)

I am planning to slip cover the couch, something neutral and washable with kids :) and will paint the walls (maybe). So basically a clean slate. The other furniture is neutral so it will stay. I could punch it up with pillows and rug to coordinate with the dining room.

Hi again Amy, covering the sofa with a neutral slipcover is a great idea. I attached a pic of another outdoor rug since you mentioned kids (I have 3 little boys and no rug at all!!! Lol) and I added the new rug to your board to see how they go together.

I think you should paint the bottom/legs of the table. Leaving the top alone slightly distress painted areas with sandpaper. This will show off your great chairs. On top of rug you select.
