Island color does not match sample

Hello,

We are 5 weeks into a major rehab of our home that includes my kitchen. We are working with an interior designer and selected white cabinets with a light gray island. I have a sample of the intended island color and it doesn't look like the color island

we received.

i have attached a photo of the gray sample against the actual cabinet delivered. Could my sample have been misleading? The island is not installed, how tricky is it to repaint?

Thanks!

You are right, doesn't look anything like it.

Wow that's a huge shade difference. The designer needs to fix that by confirming that the right color was made. If you have catalyzed conversion then paint over it, you will lose all the benefits of the original paint process.

Thanks for the reply beachem! Could you explain how we would lose the benefits of the original paint process? I'm hoping they can be returned and repainted? I was hoping to avoid painting on site. We are in the Midwest with large changes of moisture in the air, I can see how much my wood trim expands & contracts. I would hate to have that happen with my cabinets.

Catalyzed conversion isn't really paint. It's several layers of primer, paint then a mixture that bonds chemically and hardens into a coating to protect your cabinet. Think of it as a water resistant shell.

If you use simple latex paint over this, I don't know how that will affect the durability of the new paint. It would have to be done by a pro and you may need some sort of adhesion to help the paint.

You need to find out how the finish on your cabinet was done. For example, you will not have any catalyzed conversion finish in CA unless you buy from an out of state manufacturer. You may just have a simple latex paint job with a glaze.

I would demand a total replacement of the cabinets if it's catalyzed conversion. Make the designer show you the replacement shipping invoice so you don't get gypped.

It's clear from the picture that it's the wrong color, so I agree it should be replaced. Where did you order the cabinets from?

My cabinet order had a few pieces that came the wrong color--I sent pictures to the dealer who ordered replacements. It wasn't a big deal.

The cabinets are from Harlan. I checked the order with my cabinet guy this morning and his order has the correct color on it. Prior to this our first 5 weeks flew by w/out a hitch. Walls were removed, electrical, plumbing & 2 inspections - something was bound to happen at some point! We are going to meet on Monday to discuss the next steps. The sample is from Harlan and now I'm afraid they can't replicate that color. I've lost a little faith in them.

I agree that it is not your responsibility. If you have a KD, I would let that person deal with it. You chose that color based on the sample. The actual product should look extremely close to that sample.

What's weird is the sample looks like it was painted with a brush and not a catalyzed finish.

It's definitely the wrong color island. Don't lose faith. Mistakes happen all the time.

It's not the same color. They can produce any color they want. Send back the noncomplying products and ask for a sample door in the 'correct' color. Match it to the sample. Place the order and inspect on delivery. Only accept if it matches.

Site-applied finishes are not comparable to factory. Not even close.

The issue is that both are the same base color. The sample has a specialty brushed glazed black finish on top of the base color. A brushed glaze like that with a fine strié finish is a really big upcharge. Which the cabinet company obviously forgot to include.

New doors and applied end panels will fix the issue and not holdup the work. And you can still use the carcasses to set on þhe stone and hook everything up.

To me, it looks like the cabinet company did apply some kind of black glaze, but unlike the sample, the panel looks dirty rather than glazed. As others have said, make them do it correctly per the sample. And as Sophie mentioned, no striations are appearing in the finish. Was the strié finish in your order, or just the glaze?

I see strié - they run vertically on the cabinet as opposed to the horizontal striations on the sample, and can most clearly be seen at the shadow line at the bottom of the inset.

No question, the overall look is much lighter than the sample. Might they keep glazing until you reach a similar hue?
