where are you based? In a place where water is cherished, I would add a weed barrier and gravel which allows the water to enter the soil base and not contribute to run off. Turf is great in a place where water is plenty and you don't use the valuable resource for watering your lawn.

Dave's suggestion is good - but having had experience with these paving blocks I found the grass grew in patches. Also when you walk on them, in heels, it is a precarious journey! I ended up filling mine with gravel.

Definitely add greenery - to what degree depends upon your dedication to your yard. Definitely add plants and texture - soften those hard edges with rounded beds too please - this outline is too rigid!

Thanks for the responses. The outer edge will be a brick courtyard. And we live in Louisiana do water is never hard to come by.

Jay, I have used the pattern I'm attaching, and will again. I really don't care for the look of the "Open Block Paver". But I find the historic look of the spaced Sett type of paver very attractive. I don't plant between the stones, I just allow whatever greenery wants to take come through. Advantages: Appearance. Ecological - allows drainage. Greenery. Cool in Summer. Soft under bare feet. Can park a vehicle on when extra parking required. Disadvantages: lawn furniture legs/feet can sink between stones. Uneven walking surface.
