Granite For River Rock Island?? Please help!!!

Starting our kitchen redo. The island has a river rock back, the same rock as the fireplace. I've ordered cream distressed glazed cabinets. Floor is dark slate. This is a log home, very rustic, all built by hand.
Please no advice to paint logs! White shaker cabinets and gray paint would be inappropriate for the space! There is nothing trendy or in style about this home.
I'm looking for advice that respects the integrity of this type home. I'm stuck on what counter light colored granite would look nice with the river rock. The floor is very dark. Thank you!!!

Sorry, bucking your idea. It's such a substantial/weighty island, you could go with a custom [thick/chunky] butcher block or a custom live edge "slab" to balance the top of the island (the "thin" granite slab looks so delicate atop it). If you are set on stone, I vote for soapstone or a leather-finished dark granite. Yes, it will be "dark" (with the river rock and the slate floor), but it will work with the style.

It's pretty wild. All of the cabinets are being replaced and there are some changes so the granite needs to be replaced.

Jackhammer that rock off of there and have cabinet panels made for the whole thing. After you cut it down to a single level to make it more useful.

Sophie Wheeler I am praying the wall is damaged taking out the cabinets, then I could do exactly that! If that does not happen I have to work with what is here. Hubby's one and only request.

Carla H thank you for your thoughts. You are right, everything you said would fit nicely. But I need to lighten up and add some smooth surfaces. I will look into a false edge to make the granite look heftier. The granite does look flimsy.

I think darker granite would look better. Steel grey perhaps.

How about a wood counter for at least the raised area... butcher block or maybe even a live edge piece!

Have steel gray outside on another river rock area. I love it.
Would gray go with the distressed cream cabinets? They're called champagne with chocolate glaze.
I could do wood just on the bar top I think. It's not my first choice considering the abundance of wood already.

Will the surface you choose also be on the back wall counter, the area we can't see? If so I would be more concerned that the granite work with the cream cabinets than with the rocks. Do you have a sample door of the cabinet color?

I agree with everyone that the top needs to be thicker - soapstone would be beautiful ( or jet mist granite - looks alot like soapstone ) but I would go for a the live edge wood top - it would look amazing! The other thing that would help is getting stools that are more in scale with the size of the island.... these look too small..

I would prefer to use the same granite on the perimeter counters also, with the distressed cream cabinets. There's so much going on in here I'd just rather only use one countertop material. Maybe I should consider quartz so I can get a solid mid toned color. I really wanted all natural materials though.

I do plan on replacing the counter stools with something that's not backless and a lighter color. The stools that are there now are not really small, the wall is just huge! But they are out of scale, I hadn't noticed that before.

I've fallen in love with Taj Mahal quartzite but it's probably not right for this space. I also like river bordeaux and typhoon bordeaux. I saw colonial cream without any dark speckles that was pretty. Am I on the right track at all? I feel like I'm way off.

Howdy, Love that you have a unique space. I would recommend a satin finished 3cm granite with a 6cm chiseled edge to make the slab look thicker. The satin finish would contribute to the rustic aesthetic, but you also get the durability of granite. River Bordeaux satin (warmer) or Monte Criso satin (if you want to go cooler toned).

How much money do you want to spend? You can get a fantastic stone with a leathered finish at an exotic slab distributor like this one orthis one at The Stone Collection

If the home is a log cabin, I might stay away from a butcher block counter so that you don't go overboard with wood. I agree with Debbi, you need some larger stools. Gorgeous space!
