Use a dark stain, and yes white for the railings and lattice, and I think more white trim to accentuate the charming structure of the house. And I'm so seeing red geraniums (pelargoniums) in white, blue or yellow containers. Just can't quite say where or how on the basis of this picture.

Shutters in the windows would look amazing !

Shutters would make a big difference ^ As for the deck, new white railings and pickets will do wonders. We'd stain or paint the deck a cool grey. It has a really nice effect and would tie in your exterior siding and white railing well.
