Dead space in open living concept

Looking for suggestions on ways to arrange furniture or best use the space in my open living concept. The pictures are taken right as you walk in our front door. Currently, I feel as though its dead awkward space between the back of the couch and our kitchen island. We do have small children so it has been a nice play area.

I know you don't want to hear this, but you have a beautiful home and that playspace is PERFECT for your kids at their young age! I wouldn't change it until they get older unless you do a lot of entertaining and have visitors over. I'm not really sure what to do, but maybe bring the teal-colored chairs and table out from the couch and make a sitting area. Add a larger, printed rug to define the space. I would probably do a round table rather than the foyer-style table that's currently there. Add a lamp, a few books, a plant, etc....like a cozy reading area!

Another idea would be to move your dining area to that dead space, and make your current dining area a play area or reading area!!!! Even better! Here's a visual:

I also like the idea of swapping your table to between the back of the couch and kitchen and using the dining area as a play area !

I'd start by moving the couch back a bit -- it's hard to squeeze between the two at the corner, and a little more distance will take some of the neck-ache out of the TV height too.

Came across this post..I have also been struggling with some dead space in open concept living. I have ideas but wonder if their are more functional ideas for this space.

Beautiful space! I would pull the sofas out a bit as it looks rather cramped. Moving the sofas and end tables out even just 6-10 inches would make a big difference. More "breathing" space there will cut into the open space some. I personally like the open space and don't consider it "dead" space at all, but it seems off-balance: all the furniture crowded around the TV and so much open space behind. Just balance it a bit more. Such a nice problem to have!
