Sheets, Pillowcases, and MORE

Today I washed, dried and ironed 40 pillowcases. This is just normal loads for probably 10 days worth. 4 beds, 1 pillow each gets changed daily, Amiees isn't included in this. I was slightly behind on doing bedding, sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, pillow covers, and matteress covers...OMG no wonder I'm tired and my back hurts...I'm killing myself here folks. I change bedding every 3or4 days with the pillowcase daily....and than there's Amiees done daily, and mine closer to 2 or 3 days....I'm burnt out, over worked, run down, and did I say I'm tired. I've decided I'll continue doing Amiees daily, no choice on that with her night sweats, I'll do mine every 3 days, I'll do pillowcases daily, but Mike and the boys I'm only going to do every 6 days, they do shower every evening...There I've said it...now you all can hold me to this..only a real wacko needs to wash this many sheets as often as I do, than to iron them also...well I don't iron Mikes anymore, but still. Sooo do you all think I can stick to this new plan? LOL!!

    Nope.

Please try to stick to your plan. Logic is that the sheets do not need to be washed and ironed so often and when you wash them as often as you do they wear out faster. Secondly and much more important, you deserve to treat yourself well. Show your family you love them by taking care of yourself. That is something many women don't do and you are a very special person who needs to show some self love. My two cents.

Save yourself a little more time and stop ironing the boys' sheets. Just finger press and hand smooth while still warm from the drier. They won't care.

    Thank everyone..

Kris..oh they will notice. They will also care as they are used to bedding feeling a certain way. However if I tell them I'm not feeling well they will be the first to telle to stop ironing.

Yes, they will notice & care... and will get used to something different. Life is too short to spend that much time & effort on sheets & pillowcases.

An old friend of mine had household help to do the laundry and ironing and those sheets and pillowcases were only changed twice a week.

As we get on in life our priorities need to change. No shame in that and not letting anyone down.

Time to make life easier Mama.

Like Larsi experimented with no LFS, time to make small changes and see how it works. Hey you can always go back to more frequent washes.

Nothing is permanent so switch it up and see how it goes, you may just like the extra time. :-)

They'really right;time to simplify. Your oldest grandson is old enough to begin helping with the sheets. Can you set a one button favorite cycle on your machine? If you sort, he can load the sheets in the washer and push the button especially if you're using the prewash measured or pod detergent. He can also put them in the dryer and push the button. You supervise, but don't bend. I started ironing handkerchiefs, napkins and pillowcases at about age 8. They weren't perfect but "would do" in my mother's words. If they can't live without ironed pillow cases, they can help. I know grannies tend to want to spoil the little ones, but I bet they will surprise you both with wanting to help and being able to live without some of the ironing. Remember when everybody wore ironed shirts every day? Then there were tee-shirt and permanent press everything. They will adapt.

I am shocked, not only at the amount of laundering, but also the added time you must be taking to make all those beds those many times per week. I would not discuss this with the family. I would simply stop. Just launder weekly, and that means everything on a weekly basis, including the pillow cases that you were doing daily (!). And stop the duvets and mattress covers laundering - I do those when I think of it, not even weekly. Stop ironing. If - if - they notice, say to whomever makes a comment: "if you want your sheets/pillowcases laundered more often, and ironed, YOU do it. Otherwise, stop complaining, I am laundering as often as normal people in 2017 do, which is weekly. End of discussion." Do not get into a discussion or debate, because I think you will give in. Walk away, and go about your business.

OMG - no way would I do that. I was noticing yesterday how wrinkly my new sheets are. In spite of that there's no way in he!! I'm going to spend time ironing sheets. I also don't wash them multiple times per week. I have other priorities. As others have suggested you may want to reevaluate your priorities.

I launder beds once a week if I'm lucky. I've been battling an as yet undiagnosed thyroid condition and sometimes I just can't push myself to get it done. I have no earthly idea how you do all that. I'd need two washers for sure - I'm contemplating a second one anyway. I have the rotary iron which helps but it's still a lot. I'll only press pillow cases and the top edge of the flat sheet now. Part of my wants to not press them at all but I can't go there yet lol.

Is there a health reason to changing pillowcases daily or is that everyone is used to a fresh pressed pillowcase every night? They'll adjust. That is just way too much for anyone to be doing.

ETA: the other day I was putting my sheets back on my bed after washing...and I was thinking how a lot of people iron their sheets. I sort of giggle to myself as I have NEVER irons sheets. "Ain't nobody got time for that" LOL

Well as some of you know me so you know I'm not a complainer about laundry lol...yesterday I was frustrated and backed up on laundry and to top it off I tried to climb a step ladder to fill a hummingbird feeder and wrenched my back, I'm very glad I did nothing but minor damage as I can barely feel the pain today. I will however continue with my plan above.

June, no one in my family has ask for their bedding to be done the way I do it, and none would ever complain. I did the complaining out of frustration....I don't wash duvets all the time..its the duvet covers I wash. That said I could never tell an 8&9 year old to say nothing of a critically ill bed bound 20 yo to do it yourself..lol.

I realize I complained, I had a bad day and felt overwhelmed but I'm going to do Amiees bedding daily, Mikes and the boys every 6 days and mine probably every 3. I enjoy ironing, its my time, its therapy..lol.

Personally I don't think every 6 days is excessive.

Housekeeping is a blessing. We honor the sacred when we clean. A friend and hospital chaplain told me that once. I think Mamap gets it.

Laundry is fun. When I returned to college in the late 90's my youngest son was about 6. He eventually figured out that I was not getting laundry done in a timely manner. He took it upon himself, at around 8, to start doing his own laundry. I probably took 5 minutes to explain it to him, lol. He has been doing his laundry ever since, poor kid. He's now 26 and lives out of state. I send him fun laundry supplies. His girl friend gets supplies too. They enjoy the products.

MamaP, I think your plan is good-- the essentials daily, and doing the rest of the beds once a week, including their pillow cases. Even at that rate, I bet you'd be "above average" in the washing frequency of the sheets. I don't think too much cleanliness is going to suffer.

I don't know you that well, but I am thinking that laundry and home keeping is how you show your people that you love them (I feel the same way about cooking). But, I think you can pull back a little bit without loving them any less, and without any guilt.

I get it MamaP, I do love the crisp fresh sheets on the bed. I change weekly sometimes more due to dogs in bed with us. I can not think of not ironing sheets and pillowcases but as you know I have a Miele rotory iron but now adays I do my sheets on my cold mangle because doing sheets for a double bed in my rotory iron meens that my left arm ar holding a part of the sheet in the air and my left arm can not handle that anymore. I also started useing my Elna press after studying alot of youtube videos and have gotten really good at it and since they are pressed they feel even better.

Most important thing is your health, if you are not healthy you cant do anything so it is time to slow down abit, I know it is hard but they all and we all

    LOVE YOU TO BITS

    your friend Björn

We compulsive peeps all know how to take care of ourselves. Not to worry.

Thank you everyone..I knew I could count on you to understand my little bit of cray cray. Lol my achy back is now fine, I'm fairly cought up on laundry and chores and I feel great. I'm treating myself to a fudge bar, which by the way my very favorate frozen fudge bars the only ones I like or will eat have been discontinued..I am devastated...don't know how I will survive.

    Love you all

Mamapinky, have you tried Magnum Bars? They come in several different combinations of chocolate, caramel, raspberry, peanut butter and more.

Mama, do you think that these family members could at least strip and make up their own beds and even carry them back and forth to the laundry room? The washing part is fun, but changing the sheets and duvets can be hard on the back. I have 5 beds in my house, but I make demands on when, how, and who helps. I work 50 hours a week, and have ton of laundry plus keeping the house clean. I gotta ask for the help sometimes, and there is no shame in that!! XOXO.

Joel, the boys are a great help and generally strip their beds for me and carry to the kitchen floor..I do make the beds myself, but that's partly because they are at school at that time, now that its summer vacation they can and will help ..I allow it and encourage their help because I want them to know how to do this stuff when they are older. Hubs strips and makes his own bed I have zero tolorance for the old fool....LOL..I can get away with calling him an old fool as iI've earned it after all these years. Haha. Amiee just can't Joel although there have been a few times she has stripped her bed and even a few times she started laundry in the past few months..once I found her struggling to make her bed..she didn't see me so I tip toed away not because I did not want to do it but because she was obviously trying hard to accomplish the task for me..she's also been ironing occasionally, I sit back and pretend I'm reading but I'm of course at the ready to catch her if she goes down. I really can't complain about the kids they are great helps...I remember a boy here once who mentioned his allowance for doing his chores my 9 yo was in complete shock that this boy gets paid for chores..Tim said I don't get allowance for doing chores because I'm helping grandma and pap I don't want paid for that..I was enourmously proud when I heard that. Most of my problem is my own fault..I get myself into stuff I shouldn't and than wonder why I'm tired. I also have that personality I can do it better and faster..my son caught me recently digging the ground up for the new sewage pipes..why did I do it...because I'm Mamapinky and I'm completely crazy.

    XOXO

Mama, you are not crazy!! As he song goes, "I am women, I am strong......."

I will say this -- speaking as a bona fide OCD person -- I have found that everyone in my house just luxuriates in freshly pressed, clean sheets and pillowcases. Until they are asked to contribute to the process! And then it becomes a total (and unnecessary) luxury. I swear, left to their own devices, they would change their sheets once a month, if that. Yes, they love my high standards, and will thank me repeatedly. But they do not want to exert any effort in meeting them. And, to their credit, they know better than to complain if something doesn't get done around here. It is rare that I have time to iron the sheets, but I do prefer it to be done. Good luck, Pinky. I know what you are dealing with!

I stopped ironing hubs sheets a good while ago after he made some sarcastic comment to me about why his sheets wernt already ironed and on the bed..EXCUSE ME ....I remember that day very well, I was up all night with a sick kid I had his sheets ready to iron but it was pushing 8 in the evening by than..I would have had them ironed and on HIS bed long before he went to bed..but when he said instead of waiting till the last minute you should have ironed them yestetday...I threw the pile of wrinkled mess in his face and told him..listen here you no good old goat you want them ironed YOU IRON THEM...I've never ironed his since he's lucky I wash them. LOL. Every time I think about this I get mad...trust me I have been known to occasionally make his sheets very wrinkly since that fateful day. Haha

Mama, I also have the same philosophy that I can do it better, faster. lol. I know you have kiddos and Amiee in and out of school, and with different capabilities. We all get frustrated and need to bitch every now and then and we know you do the very best you can. Most of us can sympathize and lend an ear. You keep that husband on his toes! That is why I do not have one! HAHAHA!

Mama, like Sally Field said to Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolias you need to stay off your feet more an be kinder to your circulatory system. LOL

Mama how are you doing with your new system. Remember it takes a while for it to feel natural and become a habit.

Unless you're getting younger, it's probably time to give the bedding a rest for a change. I understand your preference for clean, ironed, germ-free, crisp, lovely-smelling sheets and pillowcases but clean bodies on sheets shouldn't require such a strenuous routine. Back when people only bathed 1-2x a week, had no steam irons and even used starch, they probably didn't put as much effort into caring for their beds.

Hi Moroseaz, how have you been Lady? I have cut back on how often I wash sheets. Mikes and the boys every 6 days, mine every 3 and Amiees will continue at daily. I have a pretty good system unless I get behind haha so it really isn't as bad as it sounds. The fact that I have a lot of bedding is my saving grace because I don't have to wash, dry, iron and remake beds all in the same day. I can iron a few a day and generally always have plenty already ironed on bed washing day. If I had to do it all on the same day..it wouldn't happen. I try to have plenty ironed and ready..its when something happens and I get behind that I get flustered. I've decided when that happens I just won't worry about ironing them for that bed change. Ironing is my relax time, so I can flip my Safari Live I enjoy on Youtube and iron away. My ironing board is also a old heavy Proctor Hi-Lo so I could actually iron sitting down, but I've tried it and I prefer standing. I also do not iron filled sheets..not worth the aggravation, course I don't use many fitted, except on Amiees bed, but was just thinking I have some older fitted cotton percales, twin sized that I'm going to start using on the boys beds.I am still changing pillowcases daily though, the boys have a lot of allergies so they are droolers, lol.

Take care Moroseaz and let me know how you've been.

Hey, Pink. Doing fine. Thanks for asking. Rose gardening is my big hobby, not laundry, lol. Some folks on here do pre-washes and pre-soaks - I grab the garden hose and turn the water wand to 'jet spray'. During planting season I could use a washer with a garbage disposal in it. Same with the shower. Now we're looking at 117-120F temps in the coming week. Be lucky if the roses don't burst into flame.

I have never understood why anyone would iron sheets, let alone pillowcases. An aunt did that when I was growing up, and she spent untold hours in her basement. Then the sheets went on the beds, with the blankets or quilts or comforters on top of them, and no one could even see them! To this day I don't get it. To me that's a LOT of unnecessary work.

For us, luxurious sheets and pillowcases are ones that are dried outside on the clothesline, especially on a warm, breezy, sunny day. Ahhhh ... that feeling and scent cannot be beat. They don't need ironing. The breeze "irons" all the wrinkles out.

But when it's raining outside and I have to dry them in the dryer, I still don't iron them. And no one complains. If they did, they could launder their own. ;-)

No one in my house would ever complain.

Ironing smooths the fibers more than any line drying or machine dry could do. I think its all about what one likes. Its wonderful that we can all make our own choices and all have our own likes.
