Susan, hope they do well for you. The picture on the plate is the bloom from your daylily. There were two scapes and I kept one. The ones that opened here in a glass of water,today are only about a third the usual size and the color is a bit washed out too. IT gets tall if that helps you know where to place it. Enjoy

The only flowering plants in the veggie area here are the babies in the nursery. Jack still thinks like a farmer and wants to use "heavy equipment" on the corn and beans....no patience with anything he can't mow and plow at the end of the season. It's ok , we have enough space for that to work

Beautiful flowers everyone. Lisa, love your gardens. I don't think I could grow most of those. Hosta attract lots of slugs and just doesn't do well me.

I would love to work in the yard today but our temps are 92, feels like 104. Don't know how long I would last out there. Early mornings when temps are lower, humidity is higher and everything is wet.

Susan, I have sympathy for your rash. I've been having random rashes all over, but mostly arms and legs since the 13th. I thought I knew what was causing it. An herbal spray to keep mosquitoes off horses was recommended to my daughter for using on our dog. She sprayed the dog in the house that night. That's when the rash started. She tried to clean the area where she sprayed and hasn't used it again. The rash continued until Sunday and has been almost gone since. Today, rash on my arms and legs again. I just don't know now.

Ruth good luck on the rash. finding the culprits can be a frustrating search. Love the Morning Glory and the prairie phlox. WE have had some super nice plant and garden photos this month and I always enjoy that........it makes my "wish list" keep growing.

I love double daylilies and am on a hunt to find all the truffles.

Ruth-Oh no I sent you two hostas I just bought. I will say the slugs in the past

ate so many holes in my hostas I would just cut them down to the ground instead of looking at them like that. Three years ago I decided to try some in pots and I love them that way and the slugs don't eat them now. I can even move them to another shady spot if I choose. Please try the pots and see what happens.

I love everything in the package I received today. Hostas, Forest shadows and Rainbows End. Westbourne daylilies, Hurricane Lanterns and Seafoam Candy. And that beautiful prize lily.

I do love hostas but it's been a while since I tried to grow them, so I googled growing hostas in Texas. A lady in the Dallas area said what works best for her is growing them in terra cotta pots. Shirley, you said pots also. Do you find a certain kind of pots works better and do you leave them outside all year?

Lisa, my MG's used to all be named. Most of the ones that I have this year were reseeded from last year. And they are obviously crossed. I didn't even have MG's in this spot last year. I like this one also, and don't remember having this color pattern combination before. I used to try to keep them separate but as long as they are pretty I'm okay with what I get now. Here's blooms today of another next to that one.

in the yard and offers to bring us nice really big ceramic, terra cotta and etc., pots...free. I'm like REALLY, sure enough the next day he brought them, said his wife had passed away and she loved them but he had no use for them. Now I have to buy buy buy to fill them up. LOL

Hi ladies, the Morning Glory is Mt Fuji. You used to be able to get it by certain single color choices (and I LOVED the purple! from Park's or Burpee). Now, I can only find it as a mix - I got it from Remy's The Sample Seed Shop last year. So far, it seems they've gotten rid of the really murky-ish brown one that would periodically appear, but you still also get a lighter pink and lighter purple that looked a bit washed out. The deep purple and deep pink are beautiful. I'm cutting off the light blooms but still don't know when I save seed if I'll be able to get to a more brilliant seed saved collection. I only have a few vines in a pot (two, perhaps we'll have 3 solid weeks over 100 and DRY - they don't care for that out in full sun plus large vine-y anything isn't safe near a home for fire-scaping). Ruth - you should save seed from that one - if it's not near others (you mention not in that spot last year) you might get a repeat next year. Editing to add - when I grew them years ago, they had huge flowers. Now, not so much. Could be me or this year - but they were in pots and here. I still like the colors but miss the size of the bloom.

Shirley, how lucky to get those pots. I do the same thing, always looking at yard sales and resale shops for large pots and trellises. The big ceramic and terra cotta pots are so expensive new. Love your beautiful gardens.

I am home!! Hot and hot and humid and humid outside. Temp is just went up to 105 in the shade!! I love the heat but am not a fan of the humidity.

I need to get outside and survey the damage of all my plants and vegetables. I already know that the voles and moles have been revisiting....

Wow Susan - I'd not seen your set-up before! Automatic watering of it is fantastic. And, yes, I'm confusing everyone. My original GW username since 2001 had been faerygardener (and actually, it still is my user name). The "public display" went to Maggie when the move to Houzz took place and I'd left it. But, I want it back - so faerygardener it is. Hope this doesn't throw anyone for a loop. :-)

Ah, Susan I was so interested in clicking on and enlarging the picture, I didn't catch your last line that it was from Pinterest. I'm having the same quandary here - thought I'd build an extra bed for squash and with the heat wave (and other things) didn't get to it. Now I have 4 (soon to be 6) seedlings of Juane Gros de Paris Pumpkin I just bought this year wondering if I have pots big enough. I know they won't get as big as they could in the ground, but I have some jumbo pots and thinking square foot gardening methods of water and fertilizer should get me a crop. Did find some folks use half wine barrels for some squash and it works. The problem will be me keeping up a special fertilizer routine. Small bit of info from Container Garden Thread. One of the sq ft gardening pages has 2 cucumbers per sq ft space and 2 ft by 1 ft for pumpkins (so basically 2 sq ft of soil area (many sq ft beds are 12" deep which makes figuring square footage for pots easier).

I went for vertical gardening. Move all cukes to a vertical lattice. The 5 small white pumkins to a cinder block square area . With 2 planted in the block holes. Then moved 5 big max pumkins in nto the watermelon area. . Still have 6 . Hoping someone around here wants them. Moved everything around with plenty of distance away . yea.

Susan, vertical gardening....smart! It really is a very efficient way of gardening, if you can do it. A true space saver!

Susan - looking good! I went with the jumbo pot for my extra pumpkins, we'll see what happens. Your set up looks perfect. The mouse ears and daylily are delightful (no hostas for me!).

Ruth - your cannas look great. I don't have a tropical look here BUT have found that canna are the only thing that will survive in pots on my back porch (house is directly East West situated with the front of the house getting the rising sun and the back of the house getting the glaring horrid afternoon sun from noon-ish until it sets close to 8:30. Everything I tried there crumpled and died except the cannas. I grow them for the foliage, not sure if it's the hummers fighting, but the flowers always end up bent and a bit ragged. Here it is - 2 plus weeks of well over 100 (to 110) and they are happy troopers even though I lost a lot this last heat spell. (the pickle pots are a nice sedum, they should be on pot feet but I hadn't finished arranging and moving all the summer pots before the heat wave hit). It's a raised porch (bit higher than 2nd story), so generally just light plastic pots or small ceramic ones. Don't want the weight of my large ceramic ones back there. Just 6 large pots alternating red and green leaves.

Good to know on Santa Rosa Gardens - they come up a lot when I'm searching plants. I used to think they were Santa Rosa in CA and started loading the cart, but became nervous when I saw how far away they are from me. Perhaps I'll give them a go. Annies Annuals put things on sale just yesterday and I'm itching (yes even looking at those Bishops Children dead plants) to get something. Her shipping is low for me - $13.95 for Western states up to 8 plants (a lot cheaper than taking the 5 hour drive each way to go there) - East Coast U.S. twice that++ for shipping, becomes rather exorbitant going cross country.

Never heard of DummenOrange (checked their web). I like to be able to check things out at Gardenwatchdog (and was thinking I need to go add reviews as some companies don't have recent reviews). I have steered away from some places that I'd loaded carts and spent hour(s) perusing after reading the reviews (not much for evening tv summer shows - so garden browsing it is!). It can save so much heartache. Some of the new companies have such wonderful sounding names (mountain this sustainable that) then you find a bunch of people saying scam, you get dead plants,, no reply ... Now, I check the reviews first. Have 2 (cough, maybe 3) seed orders in carts (no rush, fall/winter planting but may grab this year's seed as afraid they may not carry it next year and some things I REALLY want). Planning is half the fun!

Ohhhh, Santa Rosa GArdens has LOTS of goodies and some ahe on sale. Thanks for the tip.

Lisa-I did receive the bergenia plant and also hosta little wonder.

All are happy in their new home. It has been so busy this time of year with our daylily business. Definitely not complaining but these months just fly by. Not sure why but people stopping by the house to buy daylilies always come the hottest part of the day. 5 couples showed up at 4:00 and I thought I was going to melt.

A trip to town today netted my package from Best Friend Annie. Annie sent a fishy dish towel that I love. Our place here is what the locals refer to as a "lake house" Not on the lake but close enough that we spend part of most non rainy days "at the lake".

THree packs of seed, painted daisy, rudbeckia and "polaris verbena.... a new type to me but I never met a verbena I didn't like. I'm anxious to see this one.
