The sectional, is the problem. It's behemoth wrong size doesn't lend itself well to being floated in the room, which is what this room really needs. It suffers from the Original Sin of everything crammed against the walls.

Dump it. Wrong scale. Wrong shape. Wrong wall.

I totally agree Sophie. But it will be 1-2 more years because we have 3 smallish kids and are saving for something really well made. That being said, I still would like to have additional seating now because we are a 7 person family.

I could put 1-2 cheaper chairs in there now and re-purpose them in the basement when we get new sofas. But I'd still like some help with ideas on what we can put in the space now that will fit with the sad sectional.

I welcome ideas on sofa style too for when we move the sectional.

Move the sofa in front of the window, so the chaise relates to the fireplace. That's a start to making it fit the room somewhat better. Then you have room for a couple of chairs facing the fireplace, floating in the room. A large ottoman that serves as seating and as a low room divider to the breakfast area could possibly work then. Or, a sofa table with another chaise against it.

Thanks. I'm glad I posted. You just saved me from a costly mistake. I'm going to pick up 1-2 cheap chairs from Ikea to tide me over until next year.

Here's something to try: center that rug on the fireplace and move it closer (maybe a foot from the hearth). Center the sectional as well, and move it much closer as well. There may be room for the console behind the sofa; use it as a sofa table and place a lamp (modern, arc-type) on it and also an arc-type on the far side of the chaise. There could be room for a tall plant in that corner. Use the ottoman as coffee table. Look for one upholstered chair that has some mass to balance with the sofa (I could picture a textured something in your favorite colors and pull those colors in with pillows for the sofa), angled next to the fireplace (where your console was). That could be completed with an end table and lamp, on the kitchen side of that chair. Good luck!

Alta, I really love this idea because I hate the console so it would help me hide it for now. Only hiccup is that the wiring for the TV comes out through the wall the console is on... any thoughts around that?

I guess I could get another permanent console but is that smart to do before getting the permanent sofas?

Flip the furniture around

A chair/table might hide some of the wiring mess. I'd have to see what it looks like, but you can tidy up wiring with electrical ties or those command strip loops that attach to the floor and the wiring runs through them. I learned a trick for lamp cords: to wrap them around a dowel to create loops and then pull the dowel out, and lay it on the floor against the baseboard. If there's a power strip to hide, maybe hubby can make a little "box" that's the height of the baseboard and painted to match.

Also, with three kids and a busy, busy life ahead, I would definitely use what you have and buy what you need (chair, lighting, artwork). Don't spend money on another console. At least with your sectional they can flop on it and snuggle; you can let it wear out!!

Alta, wiring is already threaded through the wall, I just need something there for the little cable box to sit in but I could just do a side table with a shelf beside the chair. Great ideas. Thank you all!

It's never a good idea to purchase a rug with a center medallion unless you're sure you are able to center your seating and table symmetrically on the rug and in the room otherwise, the furnishings arrangement always looks off.

You can still have a border, but just not the medallion.

Genevieve, we tried it flipped already and the back of the sectional is way too bulky. It looks terrible backing onto the kitchen. And I don't want to spend the money on a sofa table to pretty it up because the sectional is on it's last legs (mid-priced, 6 years old).

No need for the sofa table , just pull the sofa away from wall and window to center it a bit more with your TV and make it fit on the rug too.

If you have little ones running around don't buy anything with sharp edges , I always got rounded edges to avoid serious injuries .

I agree Genevieve, that's why we only have a large ottoman there now, no coffee table yet. I'm looking at round, barrel style side tables as well.

I'm going to try the layout suggested when I get home. I think the only thing I'm worried about is the sofa sticking out past the staircase. But due to its massive size I'm limited so we'll see how it works out.

The rug is very nice ,the only thing is that when there is a medallion at the centre of it you need a glass table that will show it trough, a wood one will hide it . See if you can find one of these plexiglas drum table ,

Small update. I put back the old rug back for now. It is only 8 x 10.

Move the lounge section to under the window where the treasures are piled. Put end tables with lamps (for flattering lighting) at each end of the large section. Select a pair of wood chairs for contrast, but upholstered to co-ordinate with the sectional. Put a small table between them.

I'm trying to figure out chair style now. Would something like this compliment the current sofa or is it just too many squares/rectangles?

Adding my 2 cents, I have a 3.5 year old and a 1.5 year old and I cannot "float" any furniture. It stays there until the kids are awake and then it's pushed against a wall. Something about how they get on the furniture or run into it. It's impossible.

Did you try moving the sofa under the window wall as Sophie suggested? Opens up the room for more seating.

And when chairs are floating in the room on an angle they will look and feel better with a curved back shape rather than boxy as you just proposed. Get the sofa nailed down 100% where you like it (I think under the windows is worth trying since it then offers you room for at least 2 more lounge chairs rather than 1).

Something like this has a nice high back for comfortable lounging when watching TV at that height and it's a nice scale and swivels. I'd suggest any finish other than grey. This brownish leather like finish would work w kids (then select rug after chair finish is nailed down for best design balance)

I haven't tried that set up. I measured and the chaise part would come past the fireplace.

I love the swivel chair option, and the kids will too. Make sure it's tough enough to play well with them! Agree that a curvy one would be a nice touch. Send another photo if/when you try the under window suggestion.

Rug is returned Karen. The one you see now is something we've had for 6 years but it is wool and cleanable, so we're still going for light but something that can be easily cleaned.

Saw both of these yesterday and went for the recliner as the other one seemed too traditional in style. I have to bring back the recliner because the colour is too cool in my lighting. But I still like the the poufy one. Is it wrong for the room? Not necessarily that colour of course.

Does the poufy chair above come with a swivel function?

Don't know why I am fixated on the swivel thing for you, other than imagining the fun a kid would have with it! Oh yeah, the original suggestion about adding a swivel chair was so that whoever would use it could switch easily between talking to the sectional people and watching the TV. So---just for the heck of it, I googled swivel chair and amazingly, my fave Ikea has only the wheeled office type. But I found this super rounded one, which comes in other colors of course:

Be aware that many of these swivel club chairs currently on the market are styled so the end of the arm has a sharp look. I'd avoid that, and stick with the soft look.

And finally, when you settle the chair thing & are ready to introduce your favorite color here and there in the room, keep in mind that you could paint that console with a color you love. Then maybe you'd like it a bit better, since it serves a useful function where it is for the time being.

I should have mentioned I'm in Canada. So there are a host of great swivels for reasonable prices online, but shipping and duties doubles the price. And I'm weary of buying a chair online. Even though it's just a temporary solution I still want it to be comfortable.

Could you eliminate the chaise, and then simply add 2 new lounge chairs (one on either side)? The new "sofa" looks like it will easily fit 4-5 people, and each chair will seat two. It just seems like the chaise portion of the sectional is restricting you. Cheers from Montreal!

Karenmo I thought about painting the console but it is not real wood so the outcome may not be so good for that much work. We've decided to forget about a new console right now until we chuck the sectional and are ready to start from scratch.

Leono thanks for your input. Unfortunately when you remove the chaise one side is left armless so we're stuck with it as is for now.

I'm going to look at this one tomorrow. The style seems better suited to my room than both of the IKEA options. And better colour options...

Would this style chair work? It's a swivel. I'm thinking two?

It would be perfect if the rounded look continued into the front edge (or corner) of the arm. I realize that most club chairs on the market now are made this way .... not sure why. Either it's a style-trend-related thing, or or it is just more economical to produce this way than the rounded arm.
