Display + Utility

I'm working with a wall in our hallway that is 14' long x 9' high and spend approximately 12" in depth, with the understanding that the corridor is 60" in total depth. The depth of the piece could be more if the solution doesn't go floor to ceiling. The solution (i.e. Bookcase, Shelving) should be for books, display items and some dishes for entertaining. Trying to avoid something custom as this is a rental. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Modern is the style in our apartment.

It's hard to tell the area you mean from this pic. Could you post one of the exact area, straight on, to supplement the one already posted?

Btw, the wall is the long wall you see to the right of the photo. This is where we want a unit or shelves of some sort.

If you must have shelves, then I suggest a bookcase and placing it so it ends where the kitchen area ends, although I think it would look crowded and impede foot traffic. If I am reading your post correctly you are including the kitchen wall to the right to be part of the hall, but the hall actually starts where the kitchen ends. If you are talking about just the hall, then having shelves or bookcases there would also look crowded. You could hang art there instead. I guess what I'm saying is, I can't really see shelves or a bookcase on that wall - at all. There just doesn't appear to be enough space!
