Stove top in Island OR on counter? And, sink in corner or to the side?

We are deciding whether to include the stove top on the island OR where it is drawn on the plan. AND, the sink we had thought possibly in the corner looking out into the back yard. The only thing about that is then I probably can't have a lazy susan.

I like the way you have it. If you want the sink at the window, can you flip the stove and sink so the sink is looking out?

Island cooktop PROS: You like it and you should get what you like! Also it looks like you don't have many wall cabinets and if you moved the cooktop, you'll add another 30-36" of wall cabinet space. CONS: Ventilation has to either be a large hood above or in countertop ($$$ and must see if possible), and maybe less counter space.

Sink PROS: Looking out those nice big windows! CONS: Sometimes more limited sink options.

What does your kitchen designer say?

I personally prefer to have my cooktop on the island, though you will hear strong opinions on both sides. People opposed to island cooktops will say that the majority of time spent making a meal is doing prep work. For me, I do all my prep work before guests arrive, so I like to be able to do my cooking while talking with guests (without my back to them). It really is a personal preference.

One concern I have looking at your plan is your island looks a bit small for a cooktop. What is the size? I would want it to be 8' minimum. But, it looks like you have room to extend it, if necessary.

To me the biggest factor in the cooktop decision is where you want to be able to prep what you will use on the cooktop. If you want to be able to prep next to the cooktop I would not put it on the island. If you do then all the trimmings and mess from the prep end up on the island and have to be moved from the island to the sink which makes a mess of the floor. That's why to me having a sink in the island is preferable. You can do all your prep on the island (which to me is really what an island is ideal for) and then wipe everything into the sink without ever having to move it over the floor.

I think you could move the sink to the corner with no problem. I had a corner sink at one point and I loved it. Having no lazy susan sounds like a bonus, to me!

Range hood will work much better on current wall. Agree that with corner windows a corner sink feels nice (although it wastes some storage underneath) -- could you shift the windows instead?

I agree with the above comment about a range hood. I would leave the cooktop where it is. I would move the sink to the corner though, it would make a nice balanced focal with the window placement. Also I know you didn't ask, but you might want to consider whether you want a bar as it looks in your plan. Our island is large and all one level because I wanted the extra prep space and I wanted it to be like a table. We have an open floor plan so I can look out into the living room without feeling blocked off. I still have stools, they are just shorter and tuck under the island. My mom had a bar in her kitchen and

recently had it removed. It was awkward and she never used it. I attached a picture of the island so you can see what I mean. (This is an older pic and the kitchen was not quite finished)

jjarvis4 we aren't considering a bar idea. But, I do think the island will be bigger than the drawing shows. I think I like your idea of a larger island and the space on the island.
