Winter Squash RIP

Between a cold wet spring, a week away in May, and various distractions, I didn't plant my winter squash until late June. Apparently, this coincided with striped cucumber beetle arrival. We had a long weekend of company then left for a week and came home to shriveled dead plants and lots of beetles. I think this was the third year in a row that I planted winter squash in this bed. I'm in NH but it looks like these beetles can winter over in the ground. I add more composted manure and fertilizer each year. If I plant in a different area, how far away does it need to be? Is the lateness of planting also a problem? If I had planted in earlier and the plants were bigger when the beetles arrived, would that have made a difference? From my reading it seems like the beetles go after the young leaves. If I use Neem, can if goes on the ground after I plant the seeds? Thanks for any advice. I usually have a squash crop to brag about and we'll miss having a good crop for cellar storage/winter eating.
