Clorox Forever?

So before I used this little new top loader I did 2 hot cycles with Affresh. I poured a litre of boiling water into the bleach dispenser to rinse that out. I flushed out the fabric softener dispenser.

I've done about 15 loads in the past 3 weeks. Suddenly, everything smells like Clorox when the load is finished. WTF???

Any ideas?

Yep city water that could be the cause.

Roc get yourself a box of POWDER Cheer to neutralize that chlorine before you have faded darks and colors.

Ya know, I had that thought as well. There is something going on with the water anyway and it wasn't like this two weeks ago. Ugh.

@mamapinky - no Cheer for me. It gets a D on ewg and I can't cope with the smell. Darks fade eventually anyway.

If there's anything else that can be used to neutralize the water it would be interesting to hear. Otherwise, guess I'm going to make Caldrea's stock go up by spraying everything with linen water I can tolerate.

    So boring. Grrrr

Same here. I live in the city limits and have noticed a distinct difference in the smell of the water coming out of the tap. No clue why they do that.

Our water too! SO hot here since June. The water was taking on a not, nice scent...and now I detect more chlorine, although the soft water system does seem to help with household water and smells.

Roc the linen spray is a cover up its not going to protect your darks from chlorine over load...you could order a laundry antichlor.

Roc, most pet stores and Walmarts, Targets sell this for aquariums to neutrilize chlorine. I've spoke of this a long while back. So many drops in so many gallons, wait one minute than add the clothing.

Not that exact one but they have ones that only neutrilize chlorine and chlormine.

I thought most of Caldrea's linen sprays were also rated D..??? I guess I should go and read lol

Great idea to use the anti-chlor. Will try to find.

@mamapinky - mostly caldrea gets C. One I discontinued is worse. Need to see if GG has sprays. Issue is so few are made.

If I can lose the chlorine and just use GG I can probably forget the spray.

Gave a nightgown and extra rinse on its own. It must be the water. Ugh. I was so spoiled for so many years with my own well water that was excellent and filtered. Being in town is great in many ways but this is not one of them.

Oops. Turns out Aqua Safe helps promote a "slime coating." So which is worse: chlorine or slime? Hilarious.

Lol.....best bet is to look online for laundry antichlor..but it may only come in 50 gallon buckets lol.

This could be a real concern Roc as chlorine in tap water does cause fading and if your water has an abundance well....also I've noticed with my city water theres certain times I can smell the chlorine more than normal as if they just boosted it so maybe yours will lessen after awhile.

Do you plan to be in this apt. Long?

I think all of us should get together and dig Roc her own well.

According to wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antichlor), "[...] Antichlors include sodium bisulfite, potassium bisulfite, sodium metabisulfite, sodium thiosulfate, and hydrogen peroxide.", and those are somewhat powerful, some are bleaches too, like hydrogen peroxide which should be used diluted in water.

I would just try to use a *very* small amount of perborate or percarbonate (really, maybe as little as a pinch or 1/8 teaspoon) or small amounts of hydrogen peroxide and see what happens. You probably won't need to do this for loads that already get some oxygen bleach already. In case you actually need to do a final rinse with antichlor, it's probably best to try hydrogen peroxide first.

    Good luck!

Yes oxygen bleach and chlorine cancel each other out, neutralize each other. I just don't know the ratio..maybe Sin will chime in here if anyone knows it would be him.

I was going to suggest a teaspoon or so of oxygen bleach like Oxiclean to neutralize the chlorine.

I have oxiclean and peroxide. Will try. Thanks for good suggestions.

Hi everyone! Sorry I'm late, but thought I'd toss this out there: we use a whole-house water filtration system, and that gets rid of the chlorine smell very nicely. I've also noticed that our clothes don't fade in the wash like they used to.

The downside of a whole-house filter is that there is no chlorine in the water, so I have to run the tub clean cycle on my washer more frequently, wash the shower liner and scrub the toilets more often, etc.

BTW, I love reading this forum! I really appreciate the input everyone gives, and everybody seems to play so nice together.

House water filtration would, of course, do it. However, my cheeseball landlord isn't likely to install one.

Roc its still a temporay situation??

Rusty Welcome to the Laundry Room. Wish I had a whole house filteration system. .lucky you.

    Stick around.
