What's Missing?

last modified: 9 years ago

At a lost as to what else is needed to complete the room in the first photo. A rug maybe but what color? There is a range of blues in the picture and the pillows are either navy blue, gray or navy blue and white with gold accents.

I'm going to eventually replace the white ceiling fan with another that more so matches the bronzed nailheads on the sofa.

Second photo is a sitting area that is near this room with a kitchen separating the two. A beveled mirror is going up on the wall behind the navy blue sofa. It's being held up by the accent chair hence the reason why it's off to the side. Plan to also put a small bar cart in this room as well.

Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated!

How many posts do you have on this. In the first photo - contrast is missing. Beige walls with beige furniture looks flat.

Thank you, I have no intentions on changing my beige wall color or removing my beige furniture. Other than your critique of this, what useful suggestions do you have to make the room stand out?

Separately, this site is not the most user friendly from a mobile device so I had to repost to include the other room photo.

    Thanks!

A large rug under the coffee table would warm up the room. I really like the look of the second picture. Since these rooms are adjoining, I'd go with a solid brighter color, maybe mustard.

Tee, these rooms are gorgeous and my eye is drawn to that lovely third color...the bright yellow flowers in one photo. I think you need a third color to go with the cream and navy. The third color will give you the zing of excitement. If you love the yellow, explore adding more touches of that. Might also consider something from green, red, pink or purple. For your pretty sitting room, I feel like you need a large piece of art on that blank wall on the left that brings in all kinds of colors and then you choose which one will serve as the accent. Also, adding green with plants often enhances a room and is soothing in a very natural way, without feeling "decorated."

Thank you Sue. Initially the rug in the second room was in the first. That floral rug is beautiful but with it being a piece of art alone, it was extremely difficult trying to find wall art.

Now that I changed things around a bit to include the abstract painting, I think I'll have better luck with finding a nice rug. You suggest a mustard rug, do you think it'll be too much if I add in yellow pillows and yellow accessories in the room?

Obviously you aren't aiming for beach style (like the picture I attached), but I think bold stripes would work in your space to add interest.

I agree with adding yellow accents...the rug could have a small pattern.. cream & yellow?.... also I love the greenery idea! That always completes a room for me

Thank you Kathleen, I'm afraid of color, as if you couldn't tell from the photos. :) I love the way how professionals are able to pull things together but I just don't have an eye for it! I like your suggestion of pulling out the yellow, just responded to Sue with adding in yellow accessories. Adding in greenery is also an opportunity to bring the room out.

    Thank you!

Thank you Bonnie, will have to use the modeling feature on the site to see how a striped rug will look.

Ha, Silver lady! Cream and yellow may work, I have a shed crazy golden retriever so anything to hide that hair in between vacuuming is a plus! Definitely adding in some greenery!

You have done a lot of hard work to make your rooms look beautiful. Clearly you have a nice sense of style. Capitalizing on the extra punch of colour as suggested above will make a lovely difference.

A suggestion for your sitting room is to replace the degree/diplomas with other prints or original art or even edgy photographs. There are lots of great sites such as Etsy for this purpose.

The certificates are beautifully framed and probably will be the most "expensive" piece of art that you will own in terms of what it cost to earn them however, they would be better suited in the study or den in my opinion. The scale of the pieces is perfect so keep that in mind when you're looking for something else if you choose to replace them.

Have fun with your final steps of pulling the rooms together.

Your first room has a sense of drama, which I like. I would raise the curtain rods up so they are halfway between the top of the window and the ceiling. Try switching the 2 coffee tables, I feel the would be better with the beige furniture. You need the yellow in 3 places for impact. Get 2 yellow pillows and put them between the blue & gray pillows on the couch so the yellow is just peeking out and it won't scare you so much. They don't have to be as bright a yellow as the flowers but don't get pastel yellow either.

I think crown molding at the ceiling and even a few plants would add a little more detail that you're looking for. You are adding a rug, and that would be perfect!

I think there is a problem of scale going on.

I would try larger lamps in both rooms. If you do decide to change them out you could use it as an opportunity to introduce another color as others have mentioned.

Would you consider removing the two matching chairs in the first room and replacing them with some smaller chairs? I think they overpower the room.

The first room appears to be also an entryway so you need to take into account the wear and tear and potential for tracking in the outdoors when choosing a rug for there.

I love the floral rug. I would prefer a more transparent coffee table, though. The current one doesn't show off the rug to advantage.

I would move the oval coffee table to the front room. I would worry about hitting my shins on the rectangular one every time I walked past coming and going.

The room looks great! I would add a rug with contrast from the room and maybe some interesting art pieces

A few adjustments to the room

If one room is larger than the other it should take the heavier beige furniture. Can't tell if the rug is laid on an angle, or if that is just a warp caused by a pano pic. Cornering furniture or angling rugs tends to make one feel there isn't adequate room for them in a space. I think you have plenty of furniture already, so focus on accessories, drapes and lighting. Correctly sized and hung drapes will visually enlarge the rooms.

I still say, beef up the curtains. Add one more panel to each side and if you can put them on rings.

Try changing one of your living room chairs to the sitting room and vice versa. The living room chairs appear too big for the room, at least both of them. It will also give you more contrast in the living room. Then pick out some accessories that pop some color into the rooms and tie them together since they are ajoining.

Love the yellow rug-very pretty. As deco and Beverly suggested, I would raise the rod on your curtains. You want them to just barely touch the floor. Instead of using the rod pocket, consider adding rings to the curtains. This will add length and make them easier to open and close. I would also consider adding a liner behind them so they aren't as sheer. It will give them some weight and a more expensive look. Nice rooms!

Like yellow rug , you could go red or soft pink for the other room , or maybe soft blue, that would lighten it and follow advice for curtains.

Adding my two cents I love the canary yellow but I think it doesn't go well with the rest of the decor IMO especially with the beige walls
