That is a really lovely space! I would suggest adding some brighter colors to give it some pop. Everything is blending together a bit. As for the windows, I can picture some Marvin windows like this looking great!

To clarify...you just bought the house and are looking to update the living room and considering replacing the large window with an even bigger one? Is this correct?

Really lovely space! That being said, I would start with elements attached to the architecture. Something like a really cool chandelier, 42" diameter, hanging lower into the room would be nice. This would connect the high peak with the living space. Also, window treatments, like Hunter Douglass Vignettes in a semi-sheer fabric, that lets natural light in - top down, bottom-up.

An area rug large enough for the space such as Maureen's inspiration photo. If a fan isn't necessary as mentioned a large hanging light!

I'm very nervous and at the same time excited to do up my house. It is 30 yrs old and needs updates throughout. I don't feel too confident about pulling it off..

@Maureen & Beltown design: Yes, thank you! I meant beams and I do plan to add stone to fireplace and an electric fireplace. I wanted to add two chandeliers instead of fans. Below is the picture of what I want. I'm wondering if the same concept will look nice? What do you think?

I would change the ceiling fans but I would NOT get rid of them and put chandeliers. You have a very high ceiling. There is a pocket of hot air just sitting up there heating up the rest of the house. They put fans there to push the hot air down to cool it off. The previous people knew what they where doing unlike 99% of people on here that just go for looks rather than function.

The brass actually looks good. You can just switch out the fan blades. But then again the price it would cost for blades you can get new fans. If you changed to nickle you would have to buy the extender poles which aren't cheap. Just try to find updated brass fans, change them and your good to go.

You could put a valance on the windows with a colorful fabric to give the room some pop. You could keep the blinds for when you want privacy as they would be out of sight under the valance when all the way up. The valance could be mounted so as to leave the transom window open like in the photo below.

Kate, for the numerous ideas, structural changes and costs involved, I would definitely consider hiring a professional. Be sure you have lots of pictures to give them a sense of your style. Interview a few so you get the right fit personally and have the same sense of where you are heading. Ask for examples of their previous work and call some of the clients to see if they were satisfied.

Those sofas are not mine..most likely a staging company..great suggestion on the fan although i had my heart set on the lightings..oh well! Will the beams look nice(as shown in the picture above) or is the ceiling too high for that?
