Yes, it most likely is (if you're talking about existing wiring in the 1965). The NEC of that era required the small appliance circuits for the kitchen to only be sized at 1500 watts and be of either 15 or 20A ampacity. 14 Gauge wire would have been acceptable. Of course, if you have 14G wiring, you need to make sure it is protected by a 15A breaker or fuse.

These days, the small appliance circuits in the kitchen must be 20A, so you have to use 12G. This appeared in the 1971 version of the code.

Of course, if you're doing renovations, you need to likely follow the current code and any receptacle outlets in the kitchen areas (not counting the exception for the fridge and the clock) need to be 20A (hence 12G) and not serve other outlets.
