Was it a potted tree when you bought it? When did you planted it?

My first thought is a root issue. Sometimes a potted tree is so root bounded that water cannot go through. Or, it could be the soil is too compacted.

It was a potted plant. We planted it a couple of weeks after we brought it home.

And if you didn't fill the hole with water (twice) before it was planted, the surrounding soil is also dry.

To determine if the above is true, probe the soil with a trowel and look.

I think it a rootbound issue. The roots were tightly packed. Water probably cannot penetrate through that tight mess.

• Since you just planted it, If I were you, I would dig it up to see if that's what it is. If so, loosen up the roots, try to be be gentle, get rid of the media the tree came in with if you can. Replant you tree in your native soil. Water deeply twice a week when soil appears dry. Over or under water can kill a tree.
