It's almost certain you have a finish over the stained wood. Sanding that seems the minimum. General Finishes makes good gel stain. I'd call them for tech support.

Thank you dan1888 , I will check out General Finishes gel stain. Years ago we used another company's gel stain to "freshen up" wood molding that had nicks and scratches. We were pretty much matching the existing color. We did not sand, and it worked out well. This time we want to go darker and a different tone so we might have to sand.

At the risk of being ran off of GW,I'll suggest Polyshades by MinWax. It's not something I'd use because I would sand but for no prep work,it might be just the ticket.

You can put General finishes gel stain over clean surfaces - no sanding required, just scrub off any hand grime. One scrub with soap and water, one wipe down with mineral spirits and you can apply it.

Wipe on thin coats until you get the color you want, then seal with their wipe-on top coat.

Minwax Polyshades is horrible - you end up with a blotchy finish OR a solid brown plastic mess. There is no control.

To kill the red, if that's your intent, use a green stain. "Raw umber" is the finisher's green. Will reduce the red and lead toward a darker brown. Unfortunately, I don't see anything on their color chart that resembles "raw umber."

What you are doing with a gel stain is using it as a "glaze." You can get a glaze made up at a good paint store into raw umber.

You'll want to top coat with another coat of compatible finish.

Likewise, avoid the Polyshades.
