I suggest that you consider a wall-mounted lamp next to the draperies rather than the table lamp. Show us more pictures and we can suggest one that might look good.

Do you need the lamp for light on the shelves or just would like to brighten the corner? How about puck light (or undercabinet lighting) above the tv or on the shelves?

You could get one of those can lights that shine up that sit on the floor. For about $10 at Lowes, Home Depot. They are usually hid behind a sofa in a corner (or hide it behind the tv). Just makes a nice glow for "no dark corners".

Good place for under cabinet lighting.

I agree that it's too dark back there. And looks too cluttered. I like a lamp on the shelf, but I think it needs to be smaller, moved to the right a bit, and a very bright in color. I would also eliminate the books on the shelves near it. The books seem to make it look cluttered. I think some bright color-popping vases would look really nice. You might also consider using a bright, contrasting color paint or wallpaper just on the back wall of the shelves. Kind of like this:

Here is a long view of the whole space, minus any lamp! I like the idea of under cabinet lighting, but I think you would see it when seated on couch.

Yes, great suggestion colonialgp, I would do exactly the same thing, remove the shelf and put in a contrasting color lamp.
