Kitchen backsplash dilemma

I need advice about my log home kitchen redo. I am changing the backsplash, countertop, sink, walls and lighting. We kept the floor and the cabinets to keep costs down. So far we have installed the countertops (Viatera Volcanic Rock), farmhouse copper sink, replaced the fluorescent light with a track light and have begun covering the hideous wallpaper with shiplap. I bought a travertine backsplash but now that the countertops are in the color seems off, like it seems too gray. I bought a sample of a copper backsplash that is gorgeous but it might make the kitchen too dark. If I do use the copper backsplash I would paint the shiplap a light color-maybe a cream. For lighting I am going to put a light above the sink, and some recessed lighting at the other end of the kitchen where the track light doesn't reach. The ceiling there are not log so it will be easy. Does this sound like it will work? Any advice would be appreciated. My log home has drywall interior wall so there is a lot of wood but it's not overwhelming. Here are some photos.

The room is reading really dark right now, and I would steer away from the copper back-splash. I think once the ship-lap goes in, and you paint it light, you will be surprised how it will tie in the original back-splash. Why don't you wait until the ship-lap goes in and is painted to finally decide on the back-splash? Remember, stone is a natural material, and it will have many variations. Do you have anymore of the stone material you could put all along the window ledge, and remove the copper one to see if in fact it reads too grey?

I agree with K Interior Design Group on waiting to do the backsplash last. I love the copper backsplash, but would wait for the cream shiplap to choose. I would remove the wavy wood trim between the cabinets at the sink. (see pic below) then hang a cream roman shade.

Normally, there would be pendant lighting over the island, and sink with additional can lighting for the stove. Since you are using track, I would add can lighting over those additional areas.

Your kitchen looks great so far. I would love to see it when the shiplap is installed.

PS- my preference is the travertine backsplash.

Are you considering under cabinet lighting? I have some just between my sink and range and love it. Light from above comes from behind me when I am standing at the counter, and it cast a shadow on the counter. Under cabinet lighting shines right on where you are working.

I agree to wait on backsplash. Consider a cream subway tile. That may sound ordinary, but it is light and won't compete with the other pretty surfaces in the kitchen. I have a lot going on in my wood kitchen also. I love my subtly pretty simple backsplash.

Another thought beadboard painted a light cream color.

With the logs and the shiplap there's already a lot of uninterrupted horizontal lines. I used square travertine backsplash in my log home just to break up all the lines. I first wanted to use ceramic but the natural stone seemed more cohesive in the rustic space.

That;s the wrong color travertine. It's the silver vein. you need a Durango cream or the Ivory travertine in larger tiles. these are larger format, honed and filled ivory travertine set on a diagonal. prob 8x8's

here is what it looks like w/your granite with the cream color in a 3x6

However, I do like the copper, but again, something larger.

these are from Mius Art Mosaic and are a ceramic or porcelain, glazed to look like copper. easy to clean and install

or do these larger 6x12 tiles. notice the under cabinet lighting and how it reflects the light. this is what you need.

this slate tile will also go w/your decor

Without a doubt, you need more light. You can't do some recessed cans in the actual ceiling portion? if no, can you paint those planks white? or paint the beams white? something in the ceiling needs to be white if you can't add more lighting. you will also need under cabinet lighting.

few examples...painting the slats and using pendants

longer track lighting and recessed lights over the sink area

    longer and more track lighting.

Thank you both for the advice. I might be willing to paint the ceiling but my husband would probably have a stroke! He wants to stain the wall in the picture a wood color as an accent wall and the rest white, but that would just make it even darker. I'm holding out for a cream color or maybe a whitewash. We will be putting lighting under the cabinets as well.

The contractor also feels the backsplash color is off but I followed K's suggestion and it doesn't look as bad when I put the stone all along the window. Here is a picture of another stone we considered.

    Thanks again!

Wow lots of great ideas! Thanks so much. I am going to remove that wavy wood piece for sure and put a semi flushmount over the sink. Beth H, that backsplash is beautiful.

Might be nice to match the shiplap and ceiling tongue and groove. Either paint or stain.

Diane,,which one? I added a few more after I posted! the copper one?

I really like that other tan stone you have. but take it home and see how it looks the reddish tone.

The Mius Art Mosaic is the one I was referring to, but the cream color in the second picture is very pretty and light. The tan one in the picture I posted comes in a lighter color as well so I may take both of those home and see how they look.
