It's a brick fireplace painted with an enamel paint. It's wood burning. There is hardwood under everything and I've already removed all the other flooring. The plan is to refinish if I can.

For a quick and less expensive fix I suggest painting the bricks black.

For a more expensive facelift, consider tiling it in the Craftsman feel.

Posting this photo, not just for the tile look, but the colors of the wall and the hint of green in the tiles. Info says Carrera marble tiles, but I think small glass subway would be even better.

I would keep all the natural wood and juxtapose modern furnishings in a monochrome palette.

I'd seriously consider redoing the staircase to get rid of the prison bars look. :)

The woodwork is beautiful. The walls are dull, the fireplace is ugly, but all fixable.

Keep all of the wood unpainted, fix the floors, fireplace (tile), and repaint or wallpaper the walls. Change your ceiling fan. Find a beautiful area rug. It's going to be gorgeous.

Think restoration. Not remuddle. Put in modern furnishings, but keep the value of the home's original details. Do not touch any of that gorgeous wood without preservation being the first thought in your mind.

I would leave all the wood as is, it's beautiful. The right paint and modern furnishings will make it pop and show its beauty.

Please don't paint the wood. Paint the walls instead. A soft warm off white colour for instance.

I'm one of those people who would paint just about anything, but your woodwork is too beautiful to paint. Just gorgeous.

Do not paint! The room is light and comfortable with the gorgeous wood.
