Some decorating Opinions Please

last modified: 9 years ago

I saw a few posts where some of you are quite talented in putting things together. My son recently purchased a house. He asked me to decorate his guest bedroom. I had something in mind, but then mentioned he had a few pieces he wasnt going to use. I dont want them to go to waste, so I figured, I'd find a way to incorporate them in to the guest bedroom. I think because I already had a vision in my head, im having a hard time coming up with an idea to use these lamps and picture. Does anyone have any suggestions for bedding, curtains, perhaps a rug, that would go nicely with this?

    Do you love them?

Since lamps are cheap and easy to find..and rugs and curtains are mostly not. If you love them-you can start with them as you'd start with any other piece you love and that inspires you

if you're not sure..since you say you had a different vision in your head,,maybe show us the room first, with what's already in it, so easier to see what character it already has, and whether easy to use this or would be easier to go with different lamps. No hurry when it comes to art..Either you love it, tolerate it for somebody's sake and either grow to love it or not,, or you don't. Does your son love it?

Is your son single? That is, does he have to please anyone else with his choices?

My son is single, i think thats why he said, to go for it and decorate that room. Those lamps actually were not cheap, which is the reason I am trying to use them. I'd rather do something with them, than have them sit in the garage. I do like the idea of changing the shade, didnt think of that. I dont have a picture of the room, he is not near me. (actually hes in another state, NC) But its just a newer home, tan carpeting, white trim, newer home. He's a little more contemporary so I dont think he would care for the southwest, but please, keep the ideas coming. Its really a color scheme i am looking for with those two items.

I think the lamps are stunning. You can take them to a lamp shop and try various shades, but I'm not a fan of drum shades.

I'd keep the bedding white or cream. It's neutral, always looks fresh, goes with anything and allows the art and the lamps to be the stars. My choice would be a white matelasse spread, cream sheets, cream dust ruffle. Keep it simple.

Never I implied these lamps are cheap:) (mine are..relatively...since I don't buy new ones)I implied that rugs are more expensive..:)

But if you like them and he doesn't care that much-that's all I needed to know.

I quite like the shades..i imagine they give a good light..

Does it have furniture yet? the guest bedroom?

tan, vibrant blue green, black...a bit of reddish gold...

interesting thing-I happen to have a Pinterst Board dedicated to these/similar colors..

    what's bad it's mostly inspiration pics of pallettes..just a few products..and products -I'm not sure he'd like

let me see what I can try and put together..

say if to keep bedding cream..

and say smth like this for the pillow

(btw bedding can be dark too. depends on his style, furniture..etcetera. but I agree to keep it simple. oh no I just remembered! one of my friends refused to sleep on dark sheets said she needs pastel colors. but a) happened to me once, and b) she's a girl. (I know I'm too. we actually have really similar tastes. That's why I was so shocked with this pastel thing about bedding.)

so maybe cream, just in case. or two sets-light one and dark one, as mood strikes, and whoever visits)

and say these are some curtains then..

..maybe smth like this for a rug? it's leather-twined..I like how color picks up a bit of this flame impression from artwork and lamps..and it's masculine..suitable for high traffic..relatively inexpensive..

then the bedding gets to be

    say, pebble

    or ivory

..and green, you repeat very easily. a plant..maybe couple books

can be some pothus or jade..these never die..

(these are neither pothus nor jade lol..I just liked the colors, green plus terracotta. very unique! lol)

Most of this stuff is on "O" excluding the last few pillows and lamp shade. The lamp shade may be on there but I didn't look.

    Continued from above...

    Fake plant
I added a white fringed throw at the end of the bed.

The lamps are stunning, but those shades do not work--too short and the shape detracts from the beauty of the ceramic base. Black shade might add some drama, but they definitely need more shade. The yellow on the lamps and in painting are nice to work with. I'd probably go very soft yellow (BM ylang ylang) for walls and use neutral bedding and drapes or window shades with some green accent pillows. While I like justerrilynn's idea above, the fiddle leaf fig is a non starter in a guest room of a single guy's house: very high maintenance if real, and a dust gatherer if artificial. My fiddle leaf fig is as demanding as a cat. Watering, feeding, cleaning leaves, moving depending on light/heat in season can be a commitment.

depends where the house is and how much light it gets..the fiddle leaf fig I mean. Mine s doing great with just watering (every 7 to 10 days). But. Agreed-not for a guest room. One wants it to be when one can kep a close eye on it. Not a room that you might skip going there for several days in a row

ahahaa I just read more carefully and saw that the fake plant was suggested!

well...some of them real ones are really easy to take care of. I'm not a green thumbs person, believe me. Complicated plants, I don't start with them. Since I did couple times and regretted it.

The large leaf fake plants aren't bad to dust like those multi little leaf plants. Just go in with a swifter duster and hit the whole room.

you know whats interesting, Those shades came on the lamp. I didnt put them on there. I never really thought much about them, but I can see how changing the shade may change the lamp. I like jerilynns color choices, any one else have a different color suggestion that may work?
