Home Interiors with Ease, this is such a pretty desk! I have so much respect for designers. You all can turn a blank canvas into something beautiful! I'm just trying to make my space feel like home. :) What else would you recommend in this living room? Pics are throughout the post.

You can mix the chrome and gold don’t count bronze as a metal it is a brown that goes with the floors and dark wood furniture....my rule and it can be broken but it is a good guideline...do 3 of each metal so 3objects of decor with something gold 3 with something chrome...

I would pull the sectional away from the wall and large window and add a long slender sofa table behind it with two big chrome lamps....

I think the tall desk is a cool idea because it not only serves a purpose or a workspace but also serves as display of books, vases, decor objects! I would just choose a wood finish that is similar in tones to the coffee table and other wood pieces. I think a good way to add color is in an upholstered chair, pillows, window treatments, and any other accessories. I also think the tall desk is a good idea because it adds variation in height to your room. You have done a great job already at picking pieces, I'm so glad I could help.

I have used so many of those desks with the wall shelf in kids rooms I just don’t see it in this beautiful room....I would rather see a beautiful piece of art hung over a writing desk with a upholstered chair...more writing desk in a sitting room rather than office looking desk....

Ok, so you have wood tones in floor, coffee table top, tv stand, desk top, now sofa table behind the sectional (which I wouldn't do) and whatever is in your kitchen.

This isn't a sitting room with a lovely desk...it's a multi-purpose room.

It needs to be cohesive. Not a patchwork quilt of styles and ideas.

You ladies are giving so much to think about in decorating this space.

Home Interiors: The height behind the sectional is 29 inches. I have not added artwork yet as I haven't had much time to shop for any. My husband wants to do a family picture wall above the desk. I'm thinking of adding a large photo above the couch on the other side of the small window.

It's good to know that bronze isn't considered a metal as I have been basing my selections around the color of fixures- all oil rubbed bronze- and these dark wood floors which I loved when I selected them, but am now finding a challenge to work with. I've already pulled the sofa away from the wall, and I too thought I should add a console table behind the couch to display lamps or other accessories. I might not be able to add the lamps (unless they can withstand a 2 & 3 yr old) because I have two small kids and this is our main living space. I do plan to add drapes. Someone recommended I use white or a color close to the paint color (BM Classic Gray). I wouldn't mind color in the drapes.

Kelsey Bringle: I love the idea of the multifunctional purpose of the tall desk, but I have to agree with Home Interiors, it feels like it belongs in my son's room. However, I would definitely love to add a desk in the empty space and an upholstered chair as you both have suggested. And I agree, I need to add some height in here and I think a bookshelf will work.

Both: Here are two additional pics from two angles. Please excuse the mess :) Let me know your thoughts! What you can't see from the pic is the staircase which is opposite the empty wall so it is the first space someone sees on the main level of our home.

Well, with a 2 and a 3 year old, I think I would invest in the $49 IKEA coffee table painted yellow and call it a day!

The coffee table I liked has a very gray wood top not warm like the desk I suggested..and the media console is dark and works well with the floors..adding the light warm wood with the chrome legs would be so pretty and still very functional.....you could add some Pottery barn art ledges over the desk they always look Chic..could add some accessories and family photos.

Melissa we went around and about before on a different thread.....you need to take a deep breath we are all adding options for Elle and her family to enjoy....my opinion on the wall desk just comes from using them a lot for kids rooms so very hard for me to suggest it for her beautiful family room when a more adult option can be used. Elle’s room will not be a patchwork of stuff my goodness sakes...she obviously has great style.

Elle thanks for the measurement on height of the sectional.......also what is the length of that long portion of the sectional?

have a few options that are very budget friendly and would not have a wood finish.

could do very durable task lamps that won’t tip easy and give some good lighting in that area...would look nice too!

Also would you ever consider turning your sectional so that the long portion is on the wall with the small window and the chaise faces the TV..than a sofa table can be added between back of short side of sectional and desk area...what are the measurements of the walls?

That sectional is way too big to reposition on that wall AND to back up a sofa table parallel to the area where the bar stools will be AND put a desk next to it. Uh, no.

The only way it would maybe work on that wall would be if the chaise piece was on the side near the kitchen. And still no sofa table....

.....(deep breath)......

E, What's the overhead lighting like in the room?

The sectional was originally on that wall but it obstructed the flow of traffic. You would run right into the arm of the couch as soon as soon as you walked up the stairs from the 1st level, so we moved it. I bought the couch without measuring my space or the sectional. If I could do it over, I wouldn't have purchased such a huge sectional.

I'll grab grab the measurements tomorrow.

Melissa: I haven't purchased any overhead lighting yet. We're using a cheap floor lamp for now.

You could remove the one corner piece..to make the sectional a bit smaller..would work better in your room...but I know those pieces are not cheap..but sometimes it just helps the room work better to let them go...something to think about...so hard to see where the stairs come in..I totally understand:)

The tv is mounted on a swivel arm so it does move, but I know what you mean. A lot of lessons learned during this experience.

I wish I could remove it but that whole left side is one piece. The two seats facing the counter is another piece and the chaise is the third piece. I already thought about figuring out how to break up the sectional...no solution

I think a pretty writing desk and upholstered chair with art above is as well a great idea. It relates back to my original thought of doing a console with two ottomans underneath and art above. The reason I changed my opinion was based on the concept you wanted a more functional desk there, but maybe the tall one was too functional looking. I probably wouldn't do a console behind the sectional just because of cleaning purposes and as well your children who can climb the back of that sofa easily I'm sure. I might consider an overreaching floor lamp on one side of the sectional and a table lamp on the other side if you're looking for a lighting solution. I definitely think you can bring in color in a subtle way with the window treatments and upholstered chair. I also would not flip your sectional, I think that would obstruct the flow and clutter the area by your bar especially if you want bar stools and a desk there. It would also still leave that wall empty. If measurements state otherwise then by all means go for it!

Your living room is cooler toned, so i would go for something warmer to give it a cosy feeling. My favourite is the last one you posted. It definitely is a suitable statement to say the least.

Excuse me if i may interfere, but i really would not opt for the yellow Ikea table for following reasons:

1. It is baby yellow, so it is cooler toned and your living room is already cool toned

2. You would get tired of the yellow after a while.

If you really need color, I would go for darker : if you like yellow you could go for amber or ocre yellow.


You would really stir it up in there.

3 piece sectional includes chaise as one piece, 2 cushions against bay window, and 3 cushions against small window.

Measurements:

piece against small window: 96.5 inches.

two pieces against bay window: 136 inches total

On the layout you posted it shows optional bathroom in the corner area near stairs...is their a door to a bathroom over there?

It's 126 inches from front leg of tv console to back one. Yes, there is a door to the bathroom. You can kind of see it in this picture. It's next to the small window.

We can't move the tv because all the wiring is behind the wall.

What about this coffee table we used in this recent design of ours? It seems like it would fit your style perfectly.

but it really is a nice space so far...found this coffee table style thought you might like it..one has a brushed gold base and the other has chrome..both easy care with kids...I would pull the sectional away from the walls a bit 6-8” if possible....would add one end table with a lamp next to chaise what is the distance from side of chaise to bathroom door..I am assuming door swings into bathroom? Let me know if you have a chance..

Nope, door swings outward :) I feel like buying a new couch now. Even though I must stick with this layout and not enjoy the bay window, the couch is big enough to seat our friends. I'll work around it by adding the table (love your choice as I saw a similar one that I loved. It did have a design - will see if I can find it again). What accent colors would work well in this space? Would you recommend white linen curtains or curtains with a small amount of color? Also, would you recommend the bookcase?

Will check the dimensions as soon as I find where the kids hid the tape measure :).

Well, now that we've established what we already knew....I would not fret over your sectional; it looks super comfy and it hold lots of kids and family and friends, with ease, while being totally stylish; that's the key to happiness in my book!

I would pick tables, etc that are kid friendly and not break the bank.

With a two and three yr old I would not have glass or hard stone surfaces... (speaking from experience)

I was at IKEA earlier today and saw that end table in yellow, white and light green... it's super cute AND $19.99.

A large pizza costs more than that!

no worries I would pull the sectional away from the back wall with the bay window and also away from wall with small window..a bit more into the middle of that area...I would add a light white round coffee table with metal base so great with kids!

would be great to add a very slender table behind sectional to add lighting...something very low and wide so they are hard to tip over but would provide lighting.

love linen drapes in all shades of neutral..a soft neutral woukd look beautiful.

Here are a few items that would look beautiful in your space..could bring more of the soft teal blue in the room with art and accessories..

The pillow covers all have zippers and can be removed and are machine washable..the faux fur goes right in the wash..easy care....

Melissa: Thank you for the recommendation! I love the yellow color and I think the tables are cute, but I don't think they fit with my style. Without seeing them in person, they look like they'd be perfect for our patio. Definitely can't do glass although I really love some of the glass tables I've seen.

Home Interiors (Is there something else I can call you?: I do have a ton of books that I'm trying to place around the house. Which is why I'd love to add one of those leaning or etagere bookcases on the wall next to the bar and then a desk on the wall next to the small window. My dilemma is figuring out wood finishes, metals would compliment the wood floors I have. I love the photos and throw you found. Are those on Houzz?

I just looked at the desks you had posted...love the white cross base one..very nice...I would have a plexiglass or tempered glass top cut for it..will help the painted surface last and not get scratched...you can also have a mirror cut for the top too..it looks really pretty...I can see a soft teal blue chair with it.

yes that is the desk but just looked at the size it is pretty small..only 38” wide.
