Here is a vote for shades alone. I think the drapes just blend into the wall too much. Also, both together feel like overkill - belt + suspenders.

Although I am generally a maximalist, I much prefer the shades alone.

Thanks everyone. I got the idea of adding the drapes from Houzz and thought it was appropriate for the living room. I can easily extend the drapery rods and plan to add a lamp. Should I also paint the walls a beige color?
