Waterproofing wire nuts...

I'm running 12-2 landscape wiring for a some outdoor lights and I plan to make the light fixture connections with wire nuts rather than those iffy piercing type connectors. The connections won't be buried in the ground, but they will still be exposed to rain/ moisture. I know you can get waterproof wire nuts, but they seem pretty pricey. Is there any reason I can't make my own by using standard wirenuts with a squirt of pure silicon caulking that I'd fill the wire nut with and then twist onto the wires? Would it also be wise to solder the connections first, before putting on the wire nuts, or is that overkill?
