I am in the midst of a remodel in which the very small kitchen is being turned into a laundry room/pantry, the dining room is being turned into a very lovely kitchen and a small room that leads on to the back porch is being turned into the dining area.

The attached picture is the new dining area. On the left will be a counter that will look into the kitchen and have bar stools. The picture was taken while standing in the living room. My plan is to have a rather long dining table (farmhouse-y) pushed against the right side of the room with chairs on the outside and a bench or church pew along side the wall (so the table can be a close to the wall as possible) when not pulled out.

The idea is that when there are just a few folks over we won't need to the entire table, but when more folks are around, then I can pull the table out. This gives me access to the door to the back porch (which is necessary as I have a dog).

The problem is lighting. I had planned to go with recessed lighting but it turns out the the ceiling there is filled with duct work. I'll have pendant lights over the counter, but am stuck as to what other lights to have in the room — given the table will not always be in the same place.

I'm wondering if sconces on the right wall would be sufficient when combined with the pendant lights or if I should have some sort of flush overhead light as well.
