Paint Help - SW Agreeable Gray vs SW Anew Gray

last modified: 7 years ago

In the process of building new construction and need to decide on a paint and I think I have it narrowed down to Agreeable Gray or Anew Gray, both by Sherwin Williams. It’s an open ranch layout with 10ft ceilings, lots of natural light to the west in the living/dining/kitchen area. Floors are a medium hardwood, cabinets are Java, granite white marble counter tops, white trim, black windows. We have a brown leather sectional too coming with us. I’m leaning Agreeable but living/dining/kitchen will have a lot of natural light from the west and I’m afraid Agreeable will be too light? My husband is leaning Anew, but I’m afraid it will pull too much warmth and be too taupe (I’d love it to stick more gray) and be too dark. But, Anew looked great in Store next to everything and lighting. Photo is of flooring behind colors (Agreeable left, Anew Right), cabinet color below, and with SW Pure White between to give idea for trim. This was also taken indoors at night! Thanks so much for any feedback!

You said you have a lot of natural light. That's the only thing that would make Mindful a better option. Here's how to compare Agreeable and Mindful in this situation:

Mindful has an LRV of 48%. (FYI) 50% LRV is the average *guideline* for residential interiors.

LRV (scale with the sun shines) tells you how much luminance; in terms of percentages, it tells you how much light a color will reflect and conversely how much it absorbs. The difference between the two colors is 12.

Value (scale with the eye icons) tells you how that luminance will look, how it will be perceived. So, Mindful will be perceived as one notch darker in value than Agreeable.

The differences aren't huge and without being able to test it in the space, you're just going to have to pick one.

... and you need to view your samples, evaluate colors at the same angle you'd see them when they're installed. So, lay the floor flat, cabinet sample and paint chips vertical.

Thanks so much! This is very helpful! I really love the darker of Mindful, afraid that Agreeable will be too light with all the west windows. The interior designer w worked with when doing flooring recommended Anew, I was just afraid it’d look too brown/yellow with our flooring and couch. Sounds like Mindful might be a better option to tie in the white trim, black windows, and couch/flooring/cabinets without being too light in the natural light. Thanks for the recommendation!

Is there a color between the two? Did both on sheetrock tonight and I liked Anew more, just afraid a smudge too dark and Agreeable too light. Anything still in warm gray family between the two?

Which would you choose if you could get really specific?

    Anew Gray only slightly lighter

    Agreeable only slightly darker

Anew Gray for sure, we both really do like it, just didn’t scream “the one!” yet. Repose Gray?

Forgot to mention you'll find ICI The Master Palette colors at The Home Depot. Only it's call Glidden there - same manufacturer, same colors as ICI just branded different.

I have used all three of those colors. In my previous home, I used Agreeable Gray and it was too light (I had a lot of natural light). In my new home I used Anew Gray and I love it (still a lot of natural light). I painted one of the rooms Mindful Gray and it looked green under the light so I repainted it to Anew Gray. I have dark hardwood floors and my trim is Moderate White.

So glad to hear - we went with Anew! So far I love it, but we don’t have any flooring or cabinets or anything in yet. But it’s such a pretty, warm, cozy color!

I'm deciding between anew, agreeable and mindful at75%. Do you have any pictures you can share with anew. Thanks

I would love to see how your project turned out Rachel Meckly! I am considering among Anew Gray, Amazing Gray, and Agreeable Gray.

We ended up going with Anew and I like it! Never ended up looking taupe and it’s such a warm color. The rest of our house is really warm too. All great colors - if it’s any help, I wish I would have looked more into Amazing. It seemed on the same scale as Anew but a more true gray. But I do like Anew!

We are in the same exact dilemma. I did two walls with the agreeable gray and I think it’s too light. We are considering going to anew gray. My husband already purchased a 5 gallon bucket of the agreeable gray and now we need to take it back to get it changed ....ugh. I would love to see pics of your anew gray as well. We have to get our painting done this weekend before our floors are installed next week.

I’ll take some better pictures in the morning with the sunrise and that will give you a better idea! I was super weary at first, but once we got it against our white trim, it looks much more gray. I’ll add more pics in the morning now that we’re moved in!

At my last house I tried all of the colors mentioned and they all showed as the undertone color. If any of the very popular colors mentioned don’t work in your space give Mega Greige by SW a try! For our space is was exactly what I had envisioned!

It is very pretty! Thank you!

Thank you. It is very nice. We ended up going with Wordly Gray and while I do like it I still think it’s too light and wish we would’ve gone with Anew. My husband though it would be too dark but I think it would’ve been perfect. Maybe next time we paint...lol.

It’s so hard, Wendy! I hear ya! I thought Anew would be too dark too. But, it turned out nice in our space. I hope you begin to love yours!

I painted my north facing bedroom Agreeable Gray by SW and it's too light and almost has a blueish undertone. It feels too cold so I am repainting and I'm going with Anew Gray. My sister did Mindful Gray in her south facing bedroom and it does have green undertones and would be too gray/green in my north facing room. I tried a section of anew on my wall and it's beautiful. It looks a bit dark but since I went so light I am going to go for it and be bolder. I can't wait to see it done!

I hope you love it! We had all three of those colors too - I agree with you about Mindful and Agreeable! Did you look into Amazing Gray? It was the only other one on my list I didn’t try. I’m still curious about it!

We chose Amazing Gray for our great room. I will post pictures as soon as it is painted.

I’d love to see amazing gray! That was one we didn’t have picked out that, looking back, I wish we would have.

I am choosing agreeable gray for my walls. What did you use for the trim and door color

We have white trim and black doors

I have struggled choosing btw anew gray and agreeable gray. Agreeable was too light for my living area but anew was too dark. I asked sherwin Williams to create a new color that is smack dab in the middle of the two and it is a beautiful neutral color.....slightly lighter than anew but still has some depth.

Do you have the custom formula? Did they lighten the anew by a certain percentage?

Have you tried collonade gray? It is very close to BM's famous Revere Pewter without the green undertone. It is also very similar to agreeable gray but slightly darker. I love it.

Hi, I am pretty confused. I am getting ready to paint the walls in my downstairs North facing family room. The room is so dark, it currently has beautiful tongue and groove wood that makes me think of vertical shiplap. The ceilings are white with dark beams. One wall is a gorgeous light colored brick with fireplace. My first thought was Accessible Beige but not sure the undertones will look good. Then I leaned towards Agreeable gray, thinkining it would be lighter in this room. Woodwork will be white. Ceilings are 7.5 feet. What do you think? I do not like yellow creamy undertones. Thank you!!!

Linda, I just had my west facing rooms painted anew. Came out awesome

@Lori A. Sawaya you said above that Anew Gray lives in the YR and can pull a murky purple look. It has a Hue of 1.52Y whereas Agreeable Gray has a Hue of 2.34Y. Is the 2.34Y far enough away from YR to not have a murky purple look? Or is it because it's LRV is much lighter? How far away from YR do I need to be to avoid a murky purple look. I do love purple, I just don't want a purple look on my walls.

Being aware and looking for moments of purple/purple-blue when it comes to colors within this hue family neighborhood is a good idea.

Whether a color from this zone ends up shifting purple depends on the light and contents of the room.

Which is why some people will insist these colors have a purple bias while others don't see it that way at all - in their space all they see are near neutrals with no discernible hue whatsoever.

Is the 2.34Y far enough away from YR to not have a murky purple look?

    So, the answer is maybe.

@Lori A. Sawaya, curious if there are certain surrounding colors to avoid if you have something painted in Anew Grey. For us, we're doing kitchen cabinets, and obviously don't want purple hues coming out. We're choosing our flooring now, and if there are specific undertones we should avoid that might enhance the purple, I'd love to be aware. Thank you!

You want to stay away from anything that looks like it belongs to the yellow-red (orange) hue family. Nothing is hidden or under anything - if it looks orange(ish) on its own or compared to a chip of Anew Gray, it's probably not a good option.

Undertones are just somebody's subjective opinion of what a color looks like to them judged under whatever random light source they happen to be looking at it under.

Which is very different from the factual color notations color experts use. And that's what I'm talking about in the previous post.

Thank you, that’s helpful as we choose our flooring and finish.

Another grey you may want to check out is SW-Lattice. It is a very pure grey with a bit of a green undertone, but it does not look green at all in our house. We have natural maple hardwood and pure white trim. Our bulbs are all 3000K LED.

I really like this color because it is very bright during the day in natural light and looks like a pure, pure grey. During the evening in our artificial lighting it warms up quite a bit without seeming greige or yellowish at all.

@Lori A. Sawaya, now I'm more confused than ever! Our walls in our east-facing kitchen are painted Mega Greige by Sherwin Williams. I FINALLY got the go-ahead to paint our kitchen cabinets and I want to paint them a complementary color to the MG. I was leaning towards Agreeable gray, but now I'm worried it's going to go too blue on me? Do I move to Wordly Gray?

Anew gray is gorgeous! Check out tuxedofarmhouse on Instagram! She has used this color in her kitchen, dining room, family room. It is very stunning!

I have agreeable grey with 17 ft ceilings, tons of natural light, and medium brown floors. I love it and don’t feel it’s too light at all

my small bathroom is anew gray...we like it...any thoughts on a navy vanity with that wall color.

Has anyone used Anew Gray with cream/off white trim?? My trim is very creamy (apparently?) and I have narrowed our wall colors down to Anew Gray or Agreeable Gray. We have TONS of natural light but mostly north facing windows.

I also have a very creamy trim, and I opted for Colonnade Gray. It's a bit darker than these two, but it's really beautiful. I'm so happy with my choice. It's a very warm gray and coordinates nicely with the warm, creamy color on my trim.

I tried Agreeable in my home and it looked like it had a blueish tint. My sister used it and it looks great in her room. I think Anew Gray is a little warmer if I remember correctly. Here are a few pics of Colonnade Gray.

SW Anew gray is perfect with sw alabaster. Love this paint combination. I have painted my house SW Anew gray. SW agreeabke gray looks cheap and way too light. I painted my front room in agreeable and bought 11 gallons of paint.

I want to switch the norm and paint my trim SW Anew Gray and walls SW Alabaster. Doing this in my master bedroom that has two northeast facing windows with a huge tree in front of them. Would love to read thoughts from anyone who has done this in any of their rooms. :)

I have anew gray currently in my bedroom on the walls and alabaster on the trim. I think it would be beautiful to have the trim and perhaps the door also sw anew gray and the walls alabaster. Another look depending on the height of your ceilings, you could paint the ceiling anew gray with alabaster walls.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback I hadn't thought of painting the ceiling anew gray but I like that idea!

Maria check out Shea McGee's masterbedroom or McGee's master bedroom. She painted her master swiss coffee which is similar to alabaster and a warmer beige ceiling. It is so pretty. I think it would look elegant if you have a vaulted ceiling. Tray ceiling I don't know if it would work as well.
