Some tapestry fabric chairs would look rich with the leather sofa and comes in all kinds of prints.

What about rugs?

I would choose a substantial chair with a fabric and pattern which can compete with that sofa.


The rug needs to be strong, also.

Judyg - that is such a fun combo - a great way to pull the old nailhead around the room. Your wing chairs add height too - something that could be really helpful with her formal high ceilinged rooms.

Beth - below are some rugs to go with the fabric scheme I put up top so you can imagine it together. The wood floors and kitchen cabinets in that house are going to love the caramel saddle leather- wowsa!

I fear the tan on the walls now will fight with it - the color (as in these photos which aren't always right) seems to have too much pink in it. The sherwin williams whole wheat I mentioned above will work with the inset carpet in the dining perfectly and has antique white at the top of the card. This is the right tone to paint all the casework (just do the cabinets around the fireplace where you are using the sofa, and then leave all the baseboard that runs across it /rest of the doors, trim wainscot, ceiling white - that will be doable without running up a big tab) Here's the link to test / go up the card to the creamy antique white

If you guys are hiring painters before you move in, and can spray out every piece of trim in antique white, that would be amazing with the wood floors and where they have white trim around exterior wood doors - but I know that isn't always the budget / timing plan. At least the trim would only need one coat.

For rugs - did a quick shop on overstock for your rug tones. I've bought there recently and was thrilled but I looked for 10 weeks and waited until I found a great, large wool rug with the colors I wanted for under 900 - I know many people really need to see their rugs in person first. Predominantly you want caramel and red, then chocolate.

If you like a more modern look, I'd personally go to Ikea and look at classic red kilim and gabbeh rugs - fairly plain, with large scale nearly modern patterns - help make that leap back to classic modern and nods to the roots of leather. Their prices can't be beat if they have the right thing, but take a swatch of fabric with you so you get a good deep red that works with the chair fabric. I looked at pottery barn and they don't have any good ones - the colors are off (and they are always priced big). Overstock has some kilim covered benches which might be a better way to bring that in - provide just a touch without voiding the formality (and the stain hiding properties) of a traditional oriental pattern.
