All your pictures are amazing. Hydrangeas & Rhodies are my favorite plants- what do you do to make them so healthy? I do fertilize mine, but would love to make them look as spectacular as all yours. Ps all my hydrangeas & azaleas & rhodendrums were planted within the last 2-3 years

    Hi Rebecca:

    Thank you for the compliment.

I actually don't do anything special to my rhododendrons or hydrangeas other than pruning them properly, in March, for the hydrangeas, in June, for the rhododendrons, then watering them regularly through the summer. I don't add any fertilizer, because our soil is rich and acid, In Vancouver, BC, where I live. The mild northwest coast climate also helps, for sure, since we don't really have snow in winter, except very occasionally, and it doesn't last..

I understand from one of your postings, on Houzz, that you live in a 4-5 climate zone. We are in a 7-8 zone on the coast. So it's hard for me to advise you, specifically, Your local garden nursery would be able to do it better than I, but if you planted them three years ago, and they are still fine it's a good sign. You are probably doing the right thing. You have to be patient though. I started planting my hydrangeas, 22 years ago, with the latest ones being planted seven years ago. As for the rhododendrons, they were already there when we bought our house.in 1990. I cut them back harshly, six years ago, and even since, they are doing so much better.

Thank you Michelle! Great points- I really appreciate it

Michelle, I thought that you were supposed to cut back hydrangea after bloom. Do yours bloom in early march or are they the type that bloom on new shoots.

I cut back my hydrangeas around the 20th of March, never before. Actually, I have just started to prune them last weekend...
They will be in full bloom at the beginning of July, and will keep their vivid colors for at least two months. Then they begin to fade gradually. Yet, they still look very nice until the end of October.
