I’m not an expert but don’t want your question to be unanswered. I would call my plumber. I’d pull up that carpeting, too, right away.

As a first step...

Check your gutters and make sure they aren't plugged and that there isn't a hole in the outside of your house, where the gutter meets the house. I've seen these types of holes, where the gutter meets the house, more than once (my old house and a friend's house). Both times, when the gutters were blocked, water would build up and flow through the hole, into the wall, and then into the house. It doesn't have to be an outside wall for this to happen. It depends on your roofline, where you gutters are placed, the easiest path for the water to drain, etc. When this happened to me, the water (a lot of water) flowed in underneath an inside wall.

Pull the carpet up, it's probably more wet underneath there than you'd expect. You've got to get it pulled up and dried out, or you will get mold.

How is your house constructed? Concrete slab on grade, or does it have a basement?

Does the wetness seem to be starting at the inside wall or is it just close to it?

Water could have gotten into your attic from a roof leak and be running down at the interior wall.

It has been a while since you posted this though. What progress have you made?

Thanks for the responses, everyone, we called our homeowners' insurance and are resolving the matter with them, since it was storm damage.
